|

Hi,
I'm dealing with some burnout and personal issues that are leaving me pretty depleted and tired. I'd like to find a laid-back place to work for a while, and I welcome all ideas.
I have a master's in TESOL and a few years experience in the US and other countries, mostly at the university level.
I'm an advanced Spanish speaker and a high beginner in French.
I'm in my 60s.
I don't need many amenties such as big box stores or night life. Great local food would be a huge plus.
A moderate climate would be nice but not essential. Lakes or rivers or some kind of water would be wonderful.
Friendly colleagues and students would be super.
A job that provided housing or at least help finding it would be helpful.
I'd prefer a smaller city to a larger one and would really like to be able to get around walking or via public transportation.
Thanks. |

I meant to say Good Places to Chill Out and Regroup?
And I'm open to places where Spanish and French aren't spoken, as long as the people are patient with attempts at speaking their language. |

How about China? Visit the China forums and nose around a bit.

Do you get a pension or any SS benefits? Teaching part time in Mexico is certainly a nice way to chill out. A single person can make a living doing it, but you'd regroup a lot more easily if you had a little something coming your way each month. |

Thanks for the responses! I've been thinking about both China and Mexico, so this is incentive to do more exploring.
MotherF, I'll post another question on the Mexico board. |

| China or South America would be my choice. Parts of Mexico are ok, but most of it is too hot for me. |

The hot parts of Mexico are mostly along the coast. If you stay in the mountains, which is a good part of the country, the weather will be pleasantly warm most of the year and cool, even cold, in the winter. |

I hate heat, so I live in Mexico City, which is about 8000 feet above sea level and generally has lovely warm, dry weather. However, it may not be a place for someone looking to "chill out". There are other, somewhat smaller cities with similar weather, like Quertaro and Cuernavaca, that might be more to your liking. However, I know nothing about the job market in these cities. |

De acuerdo. I would never use "chill out" and "DF" in the same sentence. |

Actually, since I am semi-retired and have just a few private students, all but one of whom come to my place for class, my life here is pretty idyllic, especially when I hang out in my pleasant neighborhood. Of course, if I had to run around the city to get to various students, then I would feel differently about living here. As it is, I can avoid taking public transportation during rush hours, and thus cut down on having to deal with crowds and traffic. |
