Congrats Naturegirl, I know you've wanted this for a while now.
I don't have any logisitical advice since my husband is a citizen of the country our children were born in. And as for what do I wish I knew then--really people can tell you those sorts of things but they don't mean anything until you live it. The kind of thing you have to learn from experience.
If your mother is not very computer savy, I would highly recommend a ceiva.com photo frame. It's a digital frame-picture recieve that you hook to a phone line in the US. The person who has it does not need to have a computer nor internet service to recieve pictures. The frame has a little dial up modem in it and dials itself up over night to download pics people have sent to it via a webpage. It's expensive compared to other digital photo frames, but cheaper than getting a computer and especially engenious for non computer users as they can get pictures from anywhere in the world without having to learn to use the computer.
I guess the only other tip would be develop as think of skin as possible. Everyone thinks they know the best way to parent--even people with no kids!! I they will tell you what you are doing wrong. Just let it all roll off you. |

Thanks! Wanted it for a while, but have been a good wife and never tried to trick my husband into an whoops pregnancy. We started trying when he came back to korea and got pregnant on the first try
My mom is a bit computer savvy, she has Skype. I had to sign her up for it, but whatever, she has it now!
I like your last tip a lot. |

Ok, cat's out of the bag. I'm pregnant, 3 months, due early November. I told my boss yesterday and was happily surprised at how he received the news. We plan on staying in Asia for a while and raising kids, we'd like to have another in a couple years actually.
Anyways, I'd like to hear from other women in my situation:
How was going back to work after being pregnant?
Anything you wish you knew then that you know now?
Anyone in a third country: neither yours nor your partners? That's a bit of an issue for us as my husband's visa is dependent on my job. I'm working towards a permanent visa, but it's going to take a while. |
Congrats Naturegirl!
My son is 11 months old.
The ONLY thing I would recommend to a TEFL instructor is to make sure she had her education lined up beforehand (ie. the bachelor degree/certificate minimum, and MA too) as teaching + school + baby is beyond exhausting. I believe you've already done that.
I went back to work at 3 months and my husband stayed up until 6 months (then we reversed again, I am a stay at home mom for now). Sorry, no advice on your second question, I'm at home in Canada although it's a bit of a struggle as I don't speak the language here (French).
Another vote here for an Ergo carrier which goes up to 40lbs. The Bjorn type carriers (ie crotch danglers) will cause back problems after a certain age (3-4 months) and put pressure on baby's crotch. The moby is fantastic for a newborn. Fantastic that you are getting into a birthing centre, I wish I had done the same |

Jut wanted to give a quick update, excuse the typos. I've had a lot of stess lately and ended up having the baby on Monday 52 hours after my water broke. Needless to say, I was hoping to start maternity leave on Nov 4th, my due date, certain that I'd be late and the doctor even said the baby wouldn't come out early.
Funnily enough, I went to the doctor at 5pm on Friday and they said that everythig was ok and my water broke at 2am on Saturday.
My work has been very understanding, I just sent emails saying I was taking maternity leave early.
Anyways, my advice is to know about stuff ahead of time if you're planning on getting pregnant and TEFLing and have a back up plan as well. Becuase nothing ever goes according to plan.
Both of us are fine, though the baby doesn't really want to eat now. She's very cute though |

Congrats to both NG and Guy!
Nature always has a way of letting us know we are not really in control!
Don't be pessured into feeding in a way you don't want to--use wet diaper count as the indicator of whether or not she's getting enough.
Sending warm wishes both your ways. |

Alf, alf Mabruk - naturegirl and spouse and Guy and spouse.
In the unlikely event that you're not conversant in Arabic, that means a thousand, thousand congratulations.
Blessings,
John |
