depends on school, (public private, national?) age, experience, number of qualifications, length of experience and whether or not you are married. Part time or full time?
Low-end salaries for full time non-tenured positions for a guy in his 30's are 4.5 million a year (shokutaku) to 6 million including bonuses. Tenured professor in his 50's is on about 9 or 10 million a year depending on school.

The salary ranges depends upon your age, experience and educational background. Age plays a bigger role, unfortunately for me. My university has a secret formula (not unlike the Colonel's secret recipe) which they base your salry on and it is non-negotiable as I found out. The range is about 3.6 million to about 5 million/year for foreigner professors. This is a private university. This doesn't include all the perks like travel and research budgets, travel allowance, and familyand housing supplements. Japanese profs get paid about double this and have more responsibilities, but fewer classes. |

What about the range at HS? Often they can be more lucrative than at many of the uni's, and with more security. (fewer of the 3-4 year non-renewable contracts)
Like Gordon, the salary where I work is based on several factors such as age, education, family, etc. Not including research or travel funds the range here is between 5-8 million/yr. |

Here is a sample of 2 private high school salary ranges.
3.975 million yen/year, and 3.833 million yen/year age 22-24
4.693 million yen/year, and 4.495 million yen/year age 25-29
5.746 million yen/year, and 5.696 million yen/year age 30-34
7.220 million yen/year, and 6.891 million yen/year age 35 & up
These figures include 6x a month's salary as bonus, plus 100,000, plus research fee of 120,000 yen.
There are other allowances, too, not in these figures. |

Average salaries of (Japanese) teachers at public elementary and junior high schools (not sure whether foreigners are on a different rate though) depending on length of service, age etc.
