Here is a word-for-word copy of an advert which appeared in today's Jakarta Post newspaper in Indonesia. Obviously, I haven't included the contact details.

Quote:
If you are a young, attractive female native speaker English teacher, please send your CV with photograph to:

Now, I aren't a woman so I'm not asking for advice as to whether I should apply or not, but I am curious if any female teachers or would-be teachers would consider applying to somewhere like this that blatantly recruited on looks alone?

These types of ads are quite common in Indonesia, but for jobs like sales promotions, and bar and waiting staff. However, I think it would be naive to think that the appearance of teachers doesn't affect their chances of getting a job. I know my school are quite big on appearance although that's more in terms of being presentable rather than attractive.

Thoughts?

No, I wouldn't apply for the job if I read that in the advertisement. It creeps me out. I would like to think that the school is more interested in the quality, professionalism and ability of the teacher to be hired. If the person happens to be attractive too, then wonderful, but I don't think it should be a requisite.

I'd be afraid the 'lucky' candidate who is chosen would end up in another trade entirely.... probably the creepiest job advert I've seen in a very long time.

Reminds me of an advert in a regional paper back home. "Lonely farmer with land seeks wife with tractor. Please reply to P.O box. Include picture of tractor."
