Just wanted to take your opinion before the interview with HCT management. I am a PhD (CS) with 4 years post-PhD experience and 6 years pre-PhD experience. I am going to be interviewed by the HCT management. Wondering what should I expect in terms of questions, pacakage, what should I ask for and what should I be clear about.
Thanks in advance. |

Well, for a start I think you're over qualified. Most of those over here are either over the hill or over the top.Work for HCT?Over my dead body.I used to (love them),but it's all over now.Sacked over a trivial student complaint I believe.

Well, if they offer you a mansion to live in, a private jet, a private helicopter, nukes to play with, chauffeured limos, 24/7 maid service, 24/7 chef, an unlimited expense account, $400,000 per year, and a $200,000 pension, go for it.
Otherwise...you'll be soooorrrrrrryyyyyyyyyy!

Hey mate, you used to love them. Because you were fired due to this reason or that, you started hating them which is natural. I know you EFLers have high expectations (naturally you guys are cultural ambassadress) and like being treated differently. But you got to understand that people are not the same everywhere ( I should say nice everywhere). Things happen and we move on.
I was in Hail. The worst time of my whole career. I still cant believe I ended up there. But I have moved on ...
Anyways blah ... share share share and it all will help me get a good deal for as short a while as I am going to be there.
Cheers |

Yobo, your post indicates your interview is for an IT/Computer Science faculty position at HCT. You might not get useful or relevant answers here because this forum is specifically for English language teaching and may not reflect the situation for positions in other departments and academic subjects at HCT. |

I don't think that most EFLers have particularly high expectations anymore, but they do like to be treated like the professionals that most of them are, and at least have their contracts followed. Too many EFL teachers have been royally screwed by HCT in the last couple years to find too much positive posted.
But, as to someone with your credentials teaching content, as nomad soul said, the situation is usually different... as in better. But, if you get placed at a branch like ADW, the atmosphere is still pretty toxic for everyone.

Would NOT recommend HCT Sharjah either. Poor record of losing PhDs especially in the business department. Unfortunately, you will be more qualified, a hell of a lot more qualified, than your supervisor and as they are all terrified of losing their jobs to someone more qualified, you could be on a hiding for nothing. That is of course unless you want to tug your forelock to the supervisor every day and bow and scrape and say, no no, I am not interested in being a supervisor. |

What you said above mate is true at pretty much any place you work. In the middle east, I have found people from northern parts of the middle east being very sharp in keeping the pool clean from more competent people. I have no ambitions of becoming a manager (pain in the arm). At the moment, I am just concerned about keeping one job for a while which pays me enough to save for the future.

Check out "HCT Sucks" with Google.
Start with page 1 and "A Doctor writes". You will find here the experiences of Dr Martin (MOD edit) at the hands of ICT.
Then read on.
I think you are probably going to do the interview and take the job whatever people on here say. You should decide on the terms that would be good for you and enable you to save or the future.
Then go for it.
But some good advice I have seen on an Ex pat Egypt site recently. Keep your passport n your pocket and some cash in your shoe.
Good luck.

You should also know that the 'HCT Sucks' blog has been banned here in the UAE, as it apparently 'contravenes the social and moral codes' of this fine nation.
In other words, it tells the unalloyed truth, which a lot of HCT senior managers find very annoying! |

By "banned" do you mean blocked, or are people going to jail for downloading it, like they'd go to jail for trying to bring Robitussin CF into that fine nation?

HCT Sucks has been blocked in the UAE but people are still managing to get around the block and view the site. Don't forget that 6 PhDs have gone from that one department in about 4 years. HCT says it wants PhDs for its accreditation but forgets that its supervisors are less than qualified. |
