I have to agree with the General in this case.

According to their ad, they do not guarantee 70 hours until after the two month probation period, so during the first two months there is no guarantee of any hours or salary. Also, what is the notice period during the probation period, a very important question. Also, for some teachers, the pay during the first two months is critical to get set up with housing etc.

Regarding the teachers as being freaks, schools should have competent staff who can evaluate a CV, check references and qualifications, phone or email references, check if the candidates have ever worked for reputable schools. In addition, assess the candidate during the skype interview or in person. This will eliminate the recruitment of any so-called freaks. Nevertheless, one can make a mistake and that is why you have the one month notice. Let's not forget about teachers getting screwed with false promises, distortions and lies. Both parties are taking a chance but the school has more resources and less to lose than the teacher.

As stated before, most reputable schools will have a guaranteed salary from day one and I already stated why they may not have this.

Good points General. One would assume the hiring process would be good enough but as you mentioned, this isn't always the case, I met this one girl at a party who was ex-LL, what a unique individual....

The other poster mentioned that you'll get at least 50 hours of pay per month, seems reasonable, not great but I'm sure most can survive on that in a worst case scenario.

I generally don't see LL getting a lot of bad press. I've seen the odd comment on here about false promises; lately it's been from teacherajarn who has posted about 5 times, each one slagging off LL who I strongly suspect has an agenda, aye!

Anyways, let's here from some schools with 100% positive reviews, no issues at all; wouldn't that be nice?

Also, the school is losing a lot of its market share due....

I know the person you're referring to.

I don't claim to be an "insider" or "expert" but I don't consider him to be the reason for LL's decline.

The market is changing. Yes, that person you mentioned and many of the educrats at LL could have adapted to the changed market. However, they did not. They make a high salary. Fonzi is in Beijing and does not care. As long as there is a profit. But the profit for LL won't last. Mr. G knows this. He already has plans for the future.

The new, booming market in Hanoi is IELTS.

IELTS. IELTS. IELTS.

This means (IMO) "pre-ielts." and even pre-pre ielts, as ridiculous as it sounds.

GE for kids will always be there. But after a certain level is attained by students there are many other schools operating.

Parents are more knowledgeable. They are more aware. Not saying LL IS bad in any way, as its not. There are just more schools.

Also, there is a newish school growing rapidly in Hanoi, with a branch in hcmc now.

I assume you folks reading know which school I'm talking about.....

There may have been a misunderstanding concerning my posts.

The focus of my posts was the contract that LL is offering according to their advertisement.

It states very clearly that there is a probation period for two months and if you pass it after two months one will be guaranteed 70 hours per month.
There does not seem to be a guarantee of any hours during the first two months. If the school is busy you may have a lot of hours if its slow you will only have a few. This is not standard in the EFL industry for reputable schools in Vietnam and it is nothing but a scam.

Why would LL be offering such a contract? Its very simple, the foreign management are focussing on short term profits, have no interest in treating teachers professionally, and do not care about the quality of their products. The most important aspect of any school is the teachers. A qualified and experienced teacher would not sign such a contract and those are the types of teachers a school needs to build and develop the reputation and of course profits.

It's also a guarantee that managers at LL do not sign such contracts.

Finally, the last thing that we need in Vietnam is another way for EFL schools to take advantage of teachers. We must stop this practice now so other schools do not follow in the footsteps of LL.

Refuse and resist Language Link's contracts!

This could be because hours are down at LL, even for full-timers. I know some full-timers that are on their guaranteed salary for the full-time contract hours, but they are working below these hours month after month. Not a lot of hours below the minimum guaranteed but they are below them.

The medical insurance is/was good for full-timers as well as the completion of contract bonus.

But I do agree with you that the focus is for short term profits. This is perhaps because the enrollments are way down. Student feedback has not been spectacular, but did Mr. M make any changes? How about *attempt* to even make changes?

No.

LL is a listless ship floating out in the rocky seas. There is not captain at the helm. There are a few small holes that are allowing the ship to fill up with water. The ship is slowly sinking, but nobody has a plan to plug the holes.

I could not agree more.

I did my time. I learned the ropes, and then moved on to a competitor that pays more. Very Happy This has been very common at LL. Others schools in town attract LL teachers after they get some experience.
