|
|
I have a few months before I return to an ESL job in Georgia and I want to get my CELTA certification. I'm in the US and it seems the courses are all $2495. I was also looking at Mexico (Playa del Carmen seems appealing) where the courses are $1795. The airfare is much more to Mexico ($600 to Cancun). Lodging will probably be cheaper too!
My question is, does it matter where you get the CELTA? I keep reading that for TEFL course, you want to take the course where you will (potentially) be teaching in the future. Mexico is possibly in my future but I don't know when. Is there a difference with CELTA wherever you take it? I am under the impression it's universal. Is it common for people to travel out of country to take it?
Thanks for reading! |

No real difference in the CELTA. But there may be other advantages in being connected to a training centre in-country. Maybe not. Just get one. |

By in-country, you mean my home country, or a foreign country? |

In the country where you want to teach. This is the usual advice for someone who is planning to remain in-country and look for work immediately following the course. It may not really apply to your situation, however. In your case I'd just choose a location based on convenient logistics and price. |

jserio, you do know that IH offers a CELTA course in Tbilisi? It's 975 euros, or about $1,383 US (today.) Next course is January, however. |

Yes, I saw that but I won't be living in Tbilisi and my position will resume January 20th. I was hoping to take a November course so I can be certified for the next school year. For example, I was looking at jobs in Taiwan and most of them require CELTA or some TEFL. |

You'll have to move pretty fast to sort out a November course. The Playa del Carmen course begins Nov.7 |

Taiwan only requires that you have a Bachelors degree, they don't really care about CELTA or TEFL... I had to travel from Taiwan to Vietnam to even find a CELTA trainer for example!
Btw, Vietnam's CELTA is $1500USD with good employment prospects afterwards and cheap living costs. |

Yes, I know. I'm trying to finalize a budget. I have airfare and cost down. I want to find a place to stay besides the IH housing. I've spent some time searching for monthly rentals but they are pretty costly. Anyone have some pointers? |

I think you might get some answers to this if you posted this question on the Mexico forum, if you haven't already. Also, I know someone who went through the IH course there a few months ago, and I'm pretty sure a contact at IH gave her some housing leads other than the IH housing. |

It's low season in Playa; there are hundreds of places available. You won't find them unless you're there. The online rentals are geared toward the tourists who think paying $350 a week for a hotel room is a huge bargain. |

Ironically, the opposite has held true for me! My (current) employer found the fact that I got my CELTA in an English-speaking country as favorable. That may just be an idiosyncrasy with my employer, though |
