Hello,
I have just been offered a job as a private English tutor to two Chinese children. However, the role is not exactly an English teaching position but more a mentoring role, encouraging the children to be passionate about English and to enhance their reading, comprehension and creative writing skills using literature, poetry, etc.
I realise that this is not technically "ESL" but I was wondering if anyone had had any experience of this kind of job. I have only ever really taught adults in the past so it would be great if anyone had any tips for teaching Young Learners at a more advanced level - although they are not bilingual I understand that their English is pretty good - and how to best develop their English skills at this stage. Any pointers to online resources, books etc would be very much appreciated.
Thanks! |

I tutored young learners and introduced them to board games such as Scrabble, Upwords and Clue. Movies in English are also useful. I would create vocabulary lists and pause movie and discuss vocabulary word(s).
You also might take the children to the neighborhood farmers market and build vocabulary and have discussion.
The internet is rich with educational information. There are interactive projects for kids (for example) at the NASA website. They loved exploring the solar system.
Working in the kitchen is a lot of fun. Involve your young learners in making some cookies or some snack they would enjoy and use only English.
I think you will enjoy mentoring these kids. The more fun the lesson, the more they will learn. Best of luck to you! |
