|
|
I've looked into TEFL in Korea and know that to get a job there you need to do an FBI background check, get a medical, get the approproiate visas in place but I can't find out exaclty what is required for Thailand, thought there'd be a sticky for it but can't see it and my search didn't bring up the information I needed.
Can someone break down exactly what the process and procedure is. Do I have to arrange background checks, medicals and visas in advance?
Thanks. |

For you right now what the government requires is inconsequential. What is consequential is that the better recruiters want a degree with a TEFL certificate and experience. To get a job send your resume via email to a variety of recruiters. You can look up the recruiter advertisements on Dave's or check out MOD EDIT or check the TotalESL website. Right now is the time to send out your resume to the various recruiters, because the schools are all on break and the floods here have delayed the schools from starting. Work permit and non immigration visa don't worry about it yet. With your degree and TEFL certificate you should be able to find something. Also I assume your here in Thailand. Unless you're in Thailand recruiters won't even bother contacting you, in most cases unless you're in the Bangkok Metro area they won't bother contacting you.
Another method of finding a job is to go to the large companies, like Berlitz, or ECC, or Wall Street, and give them your resume in person. They should contact you for an interview. Those places I think will definately want a TEFL certificate.
To get a work permit in Thailand, thus being legally employed requires a college degree, but there are lots and lots of people working without degrees and work permits. |

Yes, if you don't mind working for 15,000 baht per month.
Under new rules, non-native speakers NOW need to show a TOEIC score of 600 to get a non-b and work permit. (IELTS and a TOEFL scores are also accepted but I don't have the numbers handy.

Most definitely as long as you can speak English fluently. At our school we have people from all over the place, non native speakers, but they are fluent. The police don't care and a lot of schools don't care if you're teaching legally or not. The consequences are that you have to deal with the Thai embassies on visa runs. The Vientienne embassy (the most convenient one) only gives 3 multiple entry tourist visas. After that you have to go to some other country for your visa.
Another thing don't ever hand in falsified documents to a school or any government agency because then the police and the government do care and you might get arrested.
I have a degree but I still currently teach without a work permit and the only hassle is immigration. |
