Hello, I am 60 and have found that I cannot get a work permit to teach in China, Thailand and Turkey. Where can I legally get a job teaching ESL?

if you want china, keep looking. my understanding is there
is no 60-year cutoff by law. safea may have a recommendation,
but only as a guideline. any regulations are by province.

i've seen plenty of listings for 20-60 years. if you're 60 you
can start, and probably be rehired again and again. if over
60, just catch them at the right time. anyway, those are just
wish list numbers on the job ads.

i pm'd you with a link for a current job up to 63.
and another for an engrish teacher up to 65.
may not be suitable, but shows 60 is not the cutoff.

Your age shouldn't be a barrier to finding work in Mexico, provided you have at least a recognized TEFL certificate and/or a degree and/or teaching experience. Try posting on the Mexico forum here for more information and encouragement. By the way, I work in Mexico legally as a free-lance teacher and am even older than you Wink .

Do you have a college degree?
What kind of teaching experience (and how many years) do you have?

I'm over 65 and expect to find a job by simply showing up with documents in hand, letting schools know that I'm not doddering. The new receptionist at my dr's office last month said she was surprised I was on Medicare as i didn't look old enough. But she may have just been being nice.

In my experience, if a school has been left in the lurch by someone leaving unexpectedly, they'll take Quasimodo if he has a CELTA, a master's, and 8 years experience.

Which I do. Minus the hump, of course.

That might be fine in some places, but is not the approach I would recommend taking for China (which was one of the countries mentioned by the OP).

Certainly preconceived notions of what 'over 50' or 'over 60' mean can be overturned, and speaking face-to-face probably does help in this respect (as many people do tend to think frail, slow, out of touch etc. the older someone is).

Yes, I have an undergraduate degree in English and a Juris Doctor in Law as well as a TESOL Certificate and 1 year teaching 5th grade in Colombia and 1 year teaching Paralegal Studies at a Community College.

I had been offered a job teaching in Turkey and then found I could not get a work visa. So, I am limiting my field to countries that will provide a work visa for those 60 and older.

What a world!

Russia shouldn't be a problem for you.
Best of luck.

I've been in China (Shanghai) and am now looking at Russia, Turkey--where I know there are 60-and-older teachers working--Korea and, being an optimist, Germany. I was interviewed for a job starting in September but am not available till Jan/Feb 2012.

It's not just a problem for travelling teachers. I remember a terrible case in Britain a few years ago when a 16 year old boy from the U.A.E was kicked to death by equally young thugs. He and his friends were there at summer school

Are you 100% sure this was race related? I can't remember the case in hand and most examples of racism that have led to violence are extremely well documented in the UK.

The age of the perps makes me believe that this was not a 'racist' attack - many British cities - particularly London, Nottingham and Birmingham - have big problems with youth on youth violence, particularly regarding the theft of moile phones, trainers and ipods etc. Arabic youth in the UK do stand out to these violent youth (who are generally a mix of white, black and asian british), but because of the fact they are usually loaded and carrrying valuables rather than any racial reasons. See the famous case of the Indoneesian lad robbed on cctv during this summers riots for a good example of this in action.

Dear Der_Bomber,

Your post ended up on the wrong thread; it should be on this one

Agreed, and I think you'll probably find the same in Ukraine. There is considerable demand in Kiev - perhaps search for schools there and send them an email.

be careful.

CMU had a little problem 'bout a year ago.
the government shut down their foreign studies programs.
i heard it may have been due to 'selling' visas.
many unhappy students had their visas cancelled with
no options available.
