xe.com is easier and a better rate still, albeit two extra steps which are annoying for some people.

I was a very happy xe.com user until the beginning of this year, when they abruptly sent all of their Japan based clients a note saying they were discontinuing all Japanese transactions. No explanation.
I've been using the post office, which isn't too painful now that I, and they, know the drill, and it is relatively easy for me to slip out and head over at some point during my work day. At my branch, the process takes about half an hour, including the short bike ride and filling out the absurd form. |

I recently transferred a large sum of money from my SMBC account to my English bank account. SMBC charged me a total of Y6500.
I was offered 2 methods of transfer:
1. change the yen into pounds in Japan and then transfer the funds
2. transfer the funds in Yen and my bank in England will convert into pounds and charge the conversion fee.
I used the latter method and got more for my Yen and the funds went into my account within 2 days, |

I'll look into that. One would think they would contact the clients they kicked out, but then again... |

| I use Shinsei bank. They offer one free international transfer a month for account holders at the base level. If you're a gold member, which I am (somehow, i'm not exactly sure how) they give you three free transfers a month. Then they take out 1 yen for ever 100 yen and give you the best exchange rate for the day. It's the cheapest way I've found, and extremely easy. You do have to find a branch that can do it, though. Not all branches have the service. |
