|
|
Here's my background:
I have a B.A. in visual arts (film)
I have a M.A. in public administration
I have only 1 year of ESL experience in Georgia
I visited Istanbul for a week last Easter and loved it. I would love to teach there - preferably at a University but I'll take any job as long as it's honest pay.
What can I realistically expect there given my background? Is it possible to find a job online (here or through a recruiter) or do I need to fly there and "pound the pavement?" When is the best time to look? Will I improve my odds for a University job by taking a CELTA course first in Istanbul?
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I followed that thread last month and probably should have replied there. It seems I am qualified but I want to know more about the universities. Did you ever apply at one or just secondary schools? I was also thinking of getting my CELTA there and then finding work. But I am not sure if January would be good, or, if I should wait until June/July now that the school year has begun.

Hi Jim,
I cant really tell you about university gigs, other than the fact that everyone seems to think I should be teaching at one. But the plum jobs everyone talks about usually require connections, or so Ive found, so Id pass on holding out for one of them if I were you. At least until youve been here for a year or so.
Secondary schools. No idea. I didnt bother with them. Im retired from teaching, and I didnt come half way around the world to go back to a secondary school setting, thank you very much.
The commercial schools the ones that are actually going to hire you on the spot -- are going to pay you around 2K (TL) per month; some a little more, some a little less. But expect to work upwards of 30 hours per week, including evenings and long hours on the weekend to make that 2K. Sad but true.
Whether schools are hiring in January or not is anyones guess; it depends on the school, their staffing and their enrollment. All that changes from month to month.
My advice (for what its worth): if youre really interested in teaching in Turkey, get your CELTA or TEFL certification this winter, and then come in September when every school is hiring.
==edit==
Actually, 30 hours/week will earn you more like 24K/month at the commercial schools. I'm at a pretty good school and that's what all the new hires are making, regardless of their past experience. |
