|
|
Will the JET program accept me if I have an old crimimal conviction?
An old minor assult happened 8 years ago and under the clean slate act we have in New Zealand it has been "forgotten" and I don't have to declare it when it comes to applying for jobs.
But there is an option to select a full history by checking a box. That I think will make mention of it. JET requires a full history and I am worried they will turn me down because of this.
What do you suggest? Is there any Kiwis or any other nationalities for that matter that have been accepted with old criminal records? |

I can answer this one!
You don't have to declare it for jobs in NZ. You're not applying for a job in NZ. It will appear on your record. If it's a conviction for any form of violence then a. You don't qualify for a visa for Japan and, b. JET will reject the app outright. Sorry. |

Happyman you're probably better off speaking with a legal professional. See if you can speak to a lawyer that deals with international work issues in your home country, or barring that, speak with the Japanese embassy. They would know whether you had to identify your past record or not. |

The JET application form and information suggests that they do consider people with previous convictions. It may count against you depending on the age and nature of the crime, but it shouldn't immediately disqualify you. |

And the reality is that you can't get a visa with a criminal conviction for a crime of violence. EOS.
The further reality is that, especially out of NZ, the competition is so tough that the embassy isn't going to bother with someone with a conviction when they have literally hundreds of other good choices. |

I was told the exact same thing before teaching in Korea. But I have been here nearly 3 years.
As the conviction is over 8 years and minor I will apply for a crc and if it comes back blank then there will be no problems and I won't have to declare it.
But yes I agree. Competition is tough these days and I could be on the back foot. |

You do realize that you're applying for a job in Japan under Japanese law and interviewing on Japanese soil, don't you? NZ law doesn't apply: you have to declare it. |

No, I thought the JET program takes place in South Auckland.
I have an old friend that was in the same situation and he worked for the jet program... so thats why am double checking. I will call te Jet office in NZ and get the official word. |

He can always not declare it, and hope he slips through the cracks. Worse they can do is say no, or deny him a visa. |

Great, just what JET needs: someone with low ethical standards and a history of violence. |

That's for JET to decide.
We don't even know the situation. Hard to really judge someone for something that happened so long ago, and who we don't even know.
Think you are jumping to conclusions on judging the TS too. besides, how many people lie their way into jobs? Almost everyone |

Cthulhu, I really do feel sorry for your students. What a miserable person you must be. Sounds like you need to go to an oncheon and take a lie down.
My "history of violence" was sitting in a car when one of my freinds got into a fight outside, and to make a long story short I was found guitly by assiocation. I was simply siting in a car.
So maybe you're right, maybe JET doesn't need some homicidal axe murderer with low ethical standards.
Thanks rxk22 and others for the advice. |

Happyman, look at it this way: you can take the "Hey, don't worry, I know a guy...." stories and think you'll be fine for all your worth. After all, you're in your 20's and bullet proof. What would I know, after all? I just screen applications and do interviews. |
