I currently work for the British Council in Japan, but my long term goal is to move to South America. I was there a few years ago, fell in love with the continent and would really like to return - particularly to Colombia.

I've been applying for vacancies in South America for a while now, mostly BC jobs, but my lack of YL experience and DELTA are getting in the way. I'm considering going back to the UK to take on the DELTA intensive course this autumn (10 weeks) then having another go, but I wondered if I'd be better off coming to Colombia and doing the DELTA part time whilst I work, then see if I can get a foot in the door with a company that suits my long term plans and pays a decent wage. I'm not sure if I'm ready to take on the DELTA full time either.

Can anyone recommend some reputable schools that run the DELTA full or part time and support teachers undertaking it (financially and timetable-wise)?

Would getting the DELTA first greatly enhance my chances of getting a decent gig in the region?

Also, I'm currently working for the BC on an hourly paid basis and was hired locally. Does anyone happen to know if BC Colombia (or Venezuela) hire hourly paid staff on a local basis? As I'm not getting any joy applying from overseas I thought maybe I'd have more luck having a go in country. I appreciate that the VISA situation might make this difficult though.

Any feedback on DELTA experiences in the region would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

It will probably take you several months to a year at least to find a decent job in Colombia. pm me if you'd like more details. A DELTA would be helpful, but connections are also key here.

Hi

BC Bogota arent running the Delta this year (they're the only centre in Colombia that do it). They began offerring local, hourly paid contracts about 1 year ago and currently have a couple of teachers under these conditions.

Cheers

eric - last I'd heard the BC was offering an orientation course for the distance DELTA this September, but that was as of 5 or 6 months ago...I guess it would change my plans if they're not offering it...

Hi

Someone told me this week that they weren't doing it this year because the BC weren't doing the OC.

The only reason I can think of for why they wouldn't be doing it is because they didn't have enough candidates. I think the application has to be in before July.
