Please do not mislead people about wages in Hanoi. The $19 - $24 salary range is only offered at a very few higher-end schools, and they have stringent requirements and high expectations. Harsh winter weather, conservative environment, it's a wonderful place but not for everyone. |

For years it's been said that Hanoi is always a bit higher in pay than hcmc, it's always been at least a dollar or two more per hour since way back. I've never been to Hn, and I have to wonder why, besides what was mentioned above, although I do have a few guesses. |
Simply put, there is a much higher demand for teachers than HCM. That is why the pay is higher.
Inhanoi... your experiences maybe different but as someone who has hired teachers for for several it is quite easy to start at 2000 a month with basic, Teaching Cert with degree and/or experience.
Please spend sometime researching the job ad on dave's and newhanoian...it might even help you find something paying a bit more. |

If your looking to make $2000 a month you should look at Hanoi. Lots of demand and little supply. Teachers start at 18-22 an hour there and full time contracts are easy to find. |
If you look at the job advertisements for Hanoi you'll realize that most of the jobs are not good and to be frank, the schools are crap.
There are also more teachers in Hanoi because of the downturn back in the west.

HCM is a lot different. More supply less demand. I have 8 years exp, 6 in Hanoi and I barely reached the $2000 mark in HCM after a month of searching. The bigger salaries are available in HCM but they are not going to noobies right now. |
Yes, the teaching market in hcmc is a lot tighter, and wages are lower.
Worth noting is that although you may get $1 or $2 more per hour in Hanoi, the apartment rents are higher in Hanoi, and the costs of renewing your visa, and doing visa runs are a LOT higher. Everyone is paying taxes now also, even if they do not have a P.I.T. number. |

Well stated...general day-to-day living expenses are indeed significantly higher in Ha Noi than in HCMC..... |

The rate is at least 4-6 dollars an hour more. But your right the living cost is higher in Hanoi, especially the living cost..but if your smart there is more money to make, but at the cost of living style, really depends what your after.
The frustration level in Hanoi is what you get paid more for |

Man, cb400....talk about hitting the nail on the head!
IF ya can tolerate it up here (in The North in general - NOT easy), there's a chance for teachers with experience to make decent money......but, wow, there are some days...... |

I am planning on returning to Saigon to teach after teaching in another Asian country for 2 years.
I keep in touch with teachers in Saigon and they say there is a lot more competition there now and that the job market has changed for the worse.
Can I get some current up-to-date information on the job market in Saigon for those with all needed documents for the work permit?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can provide current info. |

As far as wages go, I think posters should be a little more conservative. I think folks who have never been in Vietnam and who don't really know what earnings are like here perhaps take as gospel the figures thrown around on this website. |
I think posters should be a little more honest.
Lots of talk of $2,000 per month. But it's very rare. Extremely rare.
This is for the best teachers, that teach writing, and work at the best schools.
Almost everyone I know, and I've been here for years, earns far less than $2,000 per month.
Oh sure, you'll meet people that say they make 2K per month, but.....
. |
Most of the guys I know feel like they're having a bad month at 2K! It depends on how many hours you can teach. I wouldn't recommend more than 25, if you want to be an effective teacher.
My best month here garnered me 62,000,000 VND. That's $3100 to you and me folks! I've average about $17,000 a year during my 3 years here and could have made more, if I weren't so lazy.
I've just moved back to Saigon and I'm looking for a job. My targeted salary is 2K a month and I'm pretty sure I'm going to hit it. I'll just have to work multiple jobs, which has it's benefits.
You can make 2K a month in Saigon, or at least I can! I have the minimum qualifications, BTW. I also know how to sell myself to managers and most Vietnamese seem to like me, especially the real bosses...the students.
OP, I sent out 6 CV's Wednesday night and had 4 responses, with 1 offer received and 2 interviews scheduled. I'll start work immediately after Tet, more than likely. |

One CV sent out Sunday at 2:45PM. At 3:05 response received requesting an interview I swear I think I'm dead and this is heaven! |

Just my .02 here...
Been here in VN 3 months now. Native speaker, blonde/blue, U.S. with BS and MS, no teaching exp. whatsoever (not to mention, 60+ yrs. young).
Took the CELTA with ILA here in HCMC (grueling pace, but excellent training!). Though no guarantees, they offered most everybody in my class a job. Me? they offered me a 6 month contract, 12 contact hrs. per week - which is precisely what I wanted/asked for. Pay? $19 gross.
Th-th-that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! |
