Hey, everyone. I'm wondering if we must always pass a medical exam in our home countries before coming to Japan or if there are times when the exam is taken after we arrive or if it's sometimes handled with a self-report questionnaire or what. There's a condition or two I've had in the past, and I'm afraid that if my doctor here has to fill out a report for me, she'll be forced to divulge that information even though it doesn't effect me now. It's nothing they can test me for now and nothing that would've effected my job performance, so if I can avoid having my doctor fill out a report on my medical history, I'll be fine. What do you think?

Any medical needed (& not a lot of visas require them IIRC) is based on current condition: just go to a doctor you've never seen before and have them complete the form.

A doctor's report is not needed for visas. It might be required by the employer (case by case, and I have not heard of many who do that).

All public school ALTs are supposed to have one annually.

I was only referring to what employers required before a person was hired. As a FT worker in a private HS, I was also required to have a physical annually (conducted at the school).

As far as I know they are not required for visas. I was supposed to have one done for my eikaiwa job before I came over but was never informed (my recruiter really bumbled that eend of things) and thus did not bring one over. During training the trainers asked for it and imagine my worry, ha. They eventually waved it for me since it was the recruiter's fault I was never informed.

So yes, can't speak for ALTs, but at least for other businesses I believe it's based on what they want.

For my company we had to either have an x-ray or a TB test.
