Mexican man apparently killed for web comments
"MEXICO CITY (AP) The decapitated body of a man was left Wednesday at the same monument in the border city of Nuevo Laredo where the corpse of a woman purportedly killed in retaliation for her postings on an anti-crime website had been left previously, authorities said.
A photo of the scene indicates the man was killed for reporting criminals on social media sites, raising fears drug cartels are increasingly targeting bloggers."

FYI: Mexico's Sec. of the Interior is like the VP & Sec. of State in the US both rolled into one job.
"MEXICO CITY (AP) The Mexican government says that its top cabinet official, Francisco Blake Mora, has died in a helicopter with the pilot and other government officials.
Presidential spokeswoman Alejandra Sota said the helicopter went down with eight people on board and there were no survivors.
The secretary of the interior oversees internal political affairs and security.
Francisco Blake Mora was appointed secretary in July 2010. President Felipe Calderon lost another interior secretary, Juan Camilo Mourino, in a plane crash in Mexico City in November 2008."

And yet more cheerful news:
"MEXICO CITY (AP) Police say the naked bodies of six men and a woman have been found on an outdoor basketball court in northern Mexico.
Police say the bodies, which bore signs of violence, were found in a village outside the city of Durango. The victims were residents of the village. Investigators say they haven't yet determined a motive.
In Acapulco, police on Wednesday found the decapitated bodies of a man and a woman inside an abandoned taxi.
The Pacific port city has seen vicious drug-related following the 2010 arrest of suspected capo Edgar Valdez Villareal, a Texas-born man known as "La Barbie."
Overall, Mexico's drug war has claimed more than 35,000 lives since President Felipe Calderon launched it in late 2006. Others put the death toll at 40,000."

Is it just me or is Mexico just getting worse all the time? |

Sorry I can't answer your poll because none of the options fit my answer.
The helicopter crash was a terrible accident, but none of the reports I heard, TV, Radio, Internet, suggested foul play. So how does that make Mexico more dangerous? I've never even been in a helicopter before so that in no way influences my decision to work and or vacation here.

Birds can rest easy that they won't be implicated in the crash. |

I can't answer the poll because it's geared toward people not already living in Mexico. And I've been here over four years and counting, with no intention of leaving. |

Ive been here more than 4 or 7, or both combined, and I also have no intention of leaving. I dont feel any less safe than I did ten years ago, and a lot safer than I felt 15 years ago. What exactly is your point, Prof Gringo?
Should we start finding scary quotes about things that happen in Chicago and New York and warn people about going there too? Yes, a lot of bad stuff is happening in parts of Mexico. We get it. But it isnt everywhere. Me, I wouldnt go to Durango right now, but would love to take a vacation in Oaxaca. There are parts of Mexico that are largely, or completely, untouched by events in the north, and the vast majority of people who are njot involved in drug trafficing will never be a victim of violance. Yes, some innocents will be. Just like everywhere else in the world. No one is making you stay in Mexico, are they? You are free to leave at any time. |

I still have a Taco Bell toy chihuahua that yells "Viva gorditas!"
I'm going to refit it to yell "Viva Mexico!"
I have to admit there are some places where I used to vacation that I will not visit or drive through, but I fly over them now to get to where I do want to be. |

Right, I dont think there is anyone here saying there isnt a serious problem. But making wide, sweeping statements about the whole country, arent very valid either. I watched a couple of hours of TV coverage about Blake Mora last night, and as pointed out by a previous poster, there was nothing mentioned about sabotage, just a mention of weather conditions. The President even talked about where the plane had been story, when maintainence had been done, etc., which seems to point to him thinking that it was an accident. Or are you going to say the President was in on it to? |

That's the second Interior Minister to die in an air crash under Calderon. I would think the next guy to get the job will stick to terrestrial transportation. |

Mexico has either:
A. The worst pilots and mechanics in the world.
OR
B. Somebody brought that helicopter down.
Since AeroMexico, Volaris and Interjet flights just dont fall from the sky (like highranking Mex Govt. officials seem to) I am inclined to go with theory B... |

I wonder if the family members of the pilots killed in this and the previous air crash are thinking the same thing...that their husbands/fathers/uncles/etc were the worst pilots in the world. |
