Hi,
I have an interview with this school in a couple of days. I'd love to hear from anyone who has worked/is working for them.
The job advert said 14000 - 15000 for 25hr working week so I thought OK, but reading further details, I noticed that the actual working week is 40 hrs. Is this normal? I decided to apply anyway because I don't mind long hours but I don't want to be made a fool of either! Any info or advice would be great!
Thanks!

WEB and some other schools like to tack on office hours. It is up to you if you are willing to accept them, there are many schools which won't require office hours.
It really is not a question of long hours, it is a question of adequate compensation for your time. They want to own you for 40 hours a week but pay you for 25. Granted, the pay at 25 teaching hours works out to 150RMB/hour which is quite fair (not taking cost of living into consideration) but at 40 hours a week you are below 100RMB/hour. You'll have to decide if that is acceptable to you. It certainly would not be acceptable for me for many reasons.
However, find out what they really mean by office hours. This term seems to vary considerably from employer to employer. Or in the case of WEB, from branch to branch. Some may be sticklers and require your ass in a chair for the time, others may not care what you do or where you go.
I wish I could offer you more direct information about that branch but I am unable to. |

25 real hours of teaching every week is a lot of work. The compensation seems to include housing, which doesn't come cheap in the city. Office hours in a language school may mean that the FT is there to provide some assistance with consulting or placing new/existing students in varieties of courses. Moreover, it may mean the FT participates in the school's curriculum development, which i doubt has much of a support from locals.
My view on such jobs is that they are a great deal of hassle that a professional FT does not need. And, i dare to speculate the appearance is more important than the qualification or skill there. |

I just saw an ad for Web International. What really caught my eye was the "pre-made" lesson plans. You might want to find out more about that. If the Web International Schools have classes for children, then it makes sense. But pre-made lessons for adults. Hm . . . Maybe their idea of pre-made lessons is "Okay, you'll teach the subordinating conjunction 'because' for 60 minutes. Your lesson must include a warm up, introduction, lesson drills, pair work, group discussion and a game."
If they do have pre-made lessons, that would be great, because I'm sure you'll need time to plan for social clubs and whatnot.
Best of luck! |
