Sorry for yet another JET question... I'll keep it short! Shocked

I know the whole selection criteria is pretty mysterious with JET, but just wondering if anyone knows how common it is for a past JET to get picked second time around (UK)?

I took part in 2003, but now that the 10-year gap has been lifted I'm applying again as I genuinely miss Japan and the job.

I have glowing references, studied Japanese formally upon my return to the UK and did a TEFL course. I'm 30 but could pass for 23.

Will my experience work in my favour? Or against me?

I know I shouldn't stress about it as it's out of my hands. But I would really like to get back in.

Any encouraging messages welcomed! Thanks everyone.

It's all likely to be a positive. I would imagine you've got better than average odds on getting an interview, and then it's all up to you to mess up from there. Smile

Good luck!

Thanks for replying! I know no one can say one way or the other was just looking for some encouragement!

(ie. I know if I posted the same comment on the gaijinpot board I woulda got a string of abuse about how I don't have a life by wanting to do JET again)

This sounds pretty desperate. Put thoughts of your age (you are well within the JET norm, which is slowly moving towards older candidates) out of your head. I think "life experience" is becoming a bit more valued in recent years.

Of course, yes, sorry. Didn't mean to come across as rude. 30 is still young after all! You know what it's like when you apply for this sort of thing, you tend to overanalyse and scrutinise everything. Best thing for me to do is just forget about it and keep my fingers crossed for an interview.

There was a returning JET with my departing group when I applied. Ive run into a few more during the last year and a half. Some of them are even older than me (I was 30 when I applied). So yes, Id say you have a chance. What kind of JET were you last time? Do you have glowing references from within Japan? Im sure theyre not looking to hire the ALT who showed up to work hung over.

Also, read up on the new pay scale. Things are changing, and not for the better in the pay department. You can find information on the FAQ page of the official program web site.
