I brought a nice bottle of Scotch as a present. Everyone politely thanked me for the scotch at my school and complemented my tastes. After two years, half the bottle remained in the staff room.

In short, I don't recommend bringing alcohol. A lot of people don't drink.

Just by a nice box of candies to be devoured in the staffroom.

Guest...

I don't think I planned on bringing a bottle of booze to work. That would make a weird impression. I will save the candies and crafts etc. for that. I was thinking more of having a stock of fine bourbons at my apartment for guests to taste or bring to parties or give as a special present to someone who loves to drink. Thanks for the advice and I will definitely take it.

Any tips on candies or chocolates that are particularly hard to find or revered in Japan?

The Japanese don't tend to go for sweet things very much. Pick something that is popular from your local area, and you'll be sure that they haven't had it before.

There are some pretty nasty candies in Appalachia that aren't too sweet. Maybe I'll get some of those. If I am going to eat fermented soybeans with a smile it seems like a fair trade...
