|

I'm a recently repatriated American who taught English in Thailand for 2.5 years. It looks like I might have the opportunity to tutor a high school student who is preparing for the SATs and/or community college. Apparently she needs help with "grammar and usage." What is a reasonable hourly rate to charge? I did some private tutoring in Thailand, but obviously my rates were much lower there than they would be here. I'd just like to hear from anyone who has tutored in the US as to what a reasonable fee range would be for this kind of service.
Some more (possibly pertinent) information: I'm 28 years old, I have a BA in history and 2.5 years English teaching experience, primarily at the Thai public high school level. I live in San Francisco, so my cost of living is pretty high. I don't know if the student lives in SF proper or not, or what her family's financial situation is. Regardless, cost of living in the surrounding areas tends to be high by national standards. I'm not sure if the student is a native speaker or not.
Could anyone who has some experience tutoring in the US give me a ballpark figure for what I should charge? Thanks! |

Don't have experience in the US, but I'd imagine the procedure is the same everywhere. Call up a local ESL school or university and see if you can get any idea of how much it would cost to get your 'friend' individual lessons there. Then base your own rate accordingly. It's also always good to be able to tell clients that your rate is much better value than an institution.
Good luck. |

Without knowing where you are at or who you are teaching this is impossible. There are middle class families who would think that anything over 10-12 dollars an hour was a rip off. Then there are wealthy elites who would think that anything less than $50 dollars an hour was a subpar course. The market fluctuates............ |

Whatever you think is the "going" rate is too low. If you are good at what you do, you need to charge a LOT. Remember you will be traveling and preparing for this tutoring time. The rate for student contact needs to carry the cost of everything else you do.
Be sure you get paid. If you don't have cash in hand after 2 hours, don't expect them to ever ante up.
I know this sounds really cynical, but good teachers are worth their weight in gold!
