So here is my problem...recently decided that I want to make a career out of teaching and would like to start getting properly certified. Right now I hold a BEd as well as a TESOL certificate, but would like to invest a bit in my education. So here is a question:
Would it be better to invest in a MA TESOL or do both the CELTA and DELTA?
I am looking to continue working in the Middle East or Japan / South Korea. I've been trying to decide on either one of these options. I am looking for jobs that are above average at universities or something similar. I already have 10 years of teaching experience in the Middle East and Asia.
Thanks in advance for your feedback and advice. |

middle east = matesol.
Korea, university positions, matesol / other jobs save your money.
I'll let one of the current Japan residents answer about Japan but I think that you will need more than an MATESOL (ABD/PhD and publications) to get something decent at the tertiary level.
Other, perhaps better options, may well include a M.Ed in ELT rather than an MATESOL (unless you plan to go into research).
At this point a CELTA/DELTA would be 2 steps backward from your B.Ed TESOL combo, especially looking at your 3 market choices.

| I'm currently in a MA TESL program. I'm hoping to go abroad as well as teach in the US. Overall I'm curious how well the MA is looked upon. Is this program really seen as a research degree? |

For the most part, you can probably count on teaching and not researching.
Refer to tttompatz's post. The degree is good for teaching in the Middle East. It is also useful for universities in Korea. It may be useful in Japan but by itself, it probably isn't enough. I've heard that it can get you into some decent positions in Hong Kong.
Beyond that ... in Latin America it might get you into some positions, but I doubt they'll pay very much. |
