I posted a thread not too long about about my school suddenly getting work permits for us foreign devils.
I have my residence permit now- they held my hand through the entire procedure and paid all costs, all I had to do was show up for five minutes to grab my booklet- and they're getting my work permit at the moment. Seems on track to be the same completely hassle-free affair the residence permit was. Wow. Somehow I'd expected much worse from a language school, particularly one going through the whole permit rigamarole for what I gather is their first time.
Anyway, I was just poking around trying to turn up info on how long I should expect to wait to get my stuff back, and I stumbled across an interesting note:
Apparently foreign teachers must legally be paid at least 3 times the minimum wage. Googling it returned a 2011 minimum wage of 796 lira per month- can I really expect to be paid 796 x 3 = 2388 TL monthly? I'd been assuming 2000, based on nothing but idle speculation by myself and some of the other teachers.
On a related topic, if they try to get me to sign off on a contract stipulating a lower monthly rate than that, should I point them to the 3x min wage rule or just let it go? On one hand, I'd been reasonably happy with the prospect of 2000 before I read that. On the other hand, I'm not one to say no to a higher salary than I expected...
Any insight would be appreciated! |

I think you are making a lot of assumptions about what will happen after you get your work permit. Most likely nothing will change, you'll still get the same net that you've been receiving. There are places where some teachers have a work permit and others don't, they are all paid according to the same scales and get the same net pay.
By the way, the minimum wage is currently 837TL gross and 661 net. |
