Scottish Oil has been keeping the bankrupt UK ticking over for a long time. Not much longer though !

English income tax ???
My impression was that this tax was levied by the UK government !

No, no, you've got it wrong. It's the income tax that English teachers pay, notably those employed by Bell. It's called High-margins, Low-labour-costs![/b]

I beg to differ. Bell's ad is not the only thing that is disgusting about them. Just check the Saudi forum and then make up your mind if you want to go and work for these outfits.

Ah, Mr Smith, I see from your CV that you have a PhD in Linguistics, and an M.A. in TESOL, but do you have a TEFL cert or a CELTA? No? I'm sorry, Mr. Smith, I'm afraid you're just not the caliber we're looking for. Best of luck.

What's that meant to mean? Directed to who?

I dont think it is meant to be directed at anyone in particular, just a poke at some of the requirements. I have run into the same thing, even though I have a 4 year degree in Education and some graduate hours, as well as many years of experience, I was turned down for a job because I didnt have a CELTA. They dont want to hire people who already know how to think for themselves, but rather sheep they can mold, and who will go along with what they are told to do, that is people with just basic qualifications who will consider themselves lucky to have the job.

What a load of old tosh!

I've been in the Middle East for the best part of a decade and taught at a university in Europe for several years before that.

How patronising of you to assume that a degree educated person with a CELTA can't think for him/herself. TEFL is about classroom performance and getting results. It's also about what you do outside of the classroom, materials design, teamwork, attending workshops etc....you get better outside the classroom with experience but inside it depends largely on who you are.

A PhD/MA TESOL is hardly a requirement for teaching Headway, Market Leader, IELTS or some other well known course/book. As someone who has recruited teachers, I'd rather have an ex-banker with a CELTA teach a course in Financial English that someone who can wax lyrical about Prahbu, Asher, Skinner, Chomsky and Krashen.

What a truly dumb thing to say from someone who should know better; that's you not me btw.
