I love 'Arabian Sands' by Wilfred Thesiger. |

Are you aware that it was banned in Oman soon after it was published in Arabic? (perhaps a re-release?) This happened just after Theisiger was there to introduce it - sometime in the early 90s. Caused a minor kerffufle, and someone up high (perhaps the Sultan?) stepped in and un-banned it. It all caused a chuckle in the expat community.
Another of my favorites which is probably still banned is "Sultan in Oman" by James Morris (before he became Jan)... about Sultan Qaboos' father.
A third is "Behind the Veil in Oman" by Unni Wikan, which was also banned in the past. This is about the women in Sohar. There is also "Mobile Pastoralists" by Dawn Chatty.
