Come to Mexico City! Apart from the usual craziness common to any great metropolis, life is good, and it's fairly easy to find work here. |
Ya know, I've always liked Mx city. I'd just spend a few days in or out of Mexico there but really liked it. I love the zaniness and open mindedness of people from Cd. Mx. Crazy levels of crime though isn't there? |

Notice that Phil posted this comment without a . By the way, what he said is true. In fact, a couple of months ago I remember reading that some Monterrey companies relocated to Mexico City to get away from the increasing violence there. As long as you look both ways before crossing the street, your life will be in little danger here.

Not, not at all. Of course, there are areas to stay out of, and you need to use common sense. But in 20 year I have never had anything more serious happen than being pickpocketed in the Metro, and they didnt get much of a haul. And I use public transport all the time. |

I've lived been living in Mexico on and off (now it's definitely on for the foreseeable future) for many years, and I have never heard one good thing said about Len, except for the fact that it's a great place to pick up some shoes. Now thanks to the above post by ton a bricks, I know why it has an unpleasant reputation. |
I've only been to Leon once, about 7 years ago. I found the place rather bland but otherwise nice. I think they were the first city to put in a metrobus.
The shoe and leather goods shopping was great though! |

...however, I'm going to be hanging around your colonia in half an hour, waiting for my wife, so be afraid... |

And I appreciate your honesty, really I do! You may know my colonia, Phil, but you don't know the coordinates of my building, so I can relax. |

Even if you don't have a CELTA/TEFL? And what about language skills? I'm assuming my not-very-good spanish (knew zero spanish until I studied for 2 months in Guatemala last spring) will be enough to negotiate getting hired initially. Am I living in a dreamworld?
I do have a couple years of actual teaching experience but it was in Europe in the 90s.
My ideal situation would be teaching EFL while simultaneously taking classes or trading tutoring in English for Spanish. And I'm not as much of a self-starter as I wish I were, so the more activities I can find to involve myself in where I'd have to speak Spanish, the better -- volunteering for a nonprofit, esgrima/natacion/correr clubs, cooking classes??? Plus, I'm a workout junkie, so I'd be looking for a gym/swimming pool/park to jog in (w/dirt trails because my knees can't take much pavement). I found a fencing club and a pool in Xela, Guatemala... but it took me 6 weeks before I figured out how to jump through all the bureacratic hoops to swim in the pool. |
