Apart from Dave's, I help out. I get email enquiries about jobs or people I know ask for help with their CV, cover letter, job advice, etc. Although it'd be NICE to get thanked or even paid Smile for it, I do it because I like it. Call it a hobby if you will.

I also believe what goes around comes around, kind of like karma. I help people , then somewhere down the road peopel will help me.

Now that i'm going through a tough time, I'm reaping what I've sown so to speak. I've had lots of peopel offer to help me out.

Sorry to hear you're going through a tough time Naturegirl. It's hard when you're far away from family /friends / your usual support network.

For what it's worth, I agree with the karma principle! But I also believe in the "kindness of strangers" principle. The number of times I or someone I know has been helped by a stranger - who had nothing to gain from it... But I think a poster above also mentioned that it's because we generally like what we do that we want to help others get the most from it.

One of the many reasons I like Dave's! Compared to many other forums, it's generally a nice place to be. People come here looking for answers or tips, and people are generous with their time. I haven't seen a lot of mean-minded or soapbox type comments, posts are generally on-topic, and there doesn't seem to be that hidden agenda thing you get with lots of other forums.

I agree a "thank you" or some sort of nod of recognition is important. But I'm not going to sit around and hold my breath waiting for one, nor will I spend a lot of time pouting if it never comes.

Helping someone else should be enough validation on its own. Anything else is nice, but is ultimately self-serving.

I've never posted a specific question to anyone, but I've been reading this forum & the Korea Forum since August, so I've learned a LOT during that time from the veteran posters.

So THANK YOU for your sage advice ... & Ttompatz in particular has been helpful, as I'll be starting EPIK in March ... so thanks!

It's gotta be frustrating to read the same questions from newbies about where to start ???? .... when all they really need to do is read the FAQ's & spend a minimum amount of time perusing previous posts.... TONS of info to be found.

If I had a beer for every beer I've been promised by someone who was planning a move to Romania and whom I've helped out, I could get really quite squiffy. Very Happy

I don't mind if some posters don't say acknowledge help given. After all, I don't really write here to help people in the first place. I write only to display my superior knowledge of EFL, culture, critical thinking skills and linguistics and so make others, especially newbies, bow down in awe of me. And as for my ideological rectitude! None can match! Certainly none from the Capitalist West. Too decadent. So that's why if some posters do not evince enough gratitude, it makes no matter. Propaganda has still been circulated, the vodka flows and the inevitable triumph will lead to the WHOLE OF MANKIND thanking me! Hic!
