| When Edex originally hired me on the visit visa, I was also told that the work visa would be processed later. After two years working for them, it was never changed from a visit visa. That left me with no recourse when they didn't provide a return ticket to home country as promised, nor did they pay the full vacation pay the first year nor any part of the vacation pay the second year. |
I know of a woman who left EdEx the same day I did. She fought them and got her money but was stranded in KSA when the driver taking her to the airport never showed and she could not get a taxi alone at night. I left with my ticket and a very small portion of the money owed me because I had other obligations and was afraid of the treatment I would receive from the government for overstaying. We learn from experience and if faced with that again I would have done the same as she did but gotten to the airport on time.
If you had called their bluff at the end of your visa they would have at least gotten you a ticket out because they are responsible for you and the visa they brought you in on. If they do not send you out they must pay a fine every day you are still in the country. You might not have gotten your vacation and back pay but you would have gotten home free. |

| Wow! I just spent an hour navigating the website and can see why Saudis think we're (not some of us!) idiots. |
Right on, Scary! What's really tacky (aside from their housing) is the visa info posted on their website (http://www.edu-experts.com/EnglishPrograms/MainE.aspx). They give a couple of "advantages" to having a business visit visa but don't list any disadvantages, such as the fact that this type of visa does not grant you the right to work or reside in KSA. BTW, the accommodations remind me of transitional housing for parolees. |

Can't imagine living in that space for an entire year. At least it's not shared housing. Or is it? |
Yes, they're still forcing some of teachers to share apartments. The ones on the web site are the better ones. |

| I've been at EdEx about a week. I moved from a small room to a large 3 room apartment. I get SAU 2800/month which pays for it and SAU 600/month transportation allowance. I double and triple up on the taxi and save money. So far, it actually isn't too bad. Granted, I've been here a week. There are many different opinions on the place, several people have been here for years and love it. Some guys have been here for weeks or months and are utterly miserable. |

People moving from ehere you did can put up with virtually any type of misery.
It's where you moved from w/o the culture and scenery! |

Dear Ir's Scary,
True - and it also depends upon the individual. Being content, being miserable - they're both so subjective and relative.
However, in that relative scheme of things, some jobs are objectively more likely to produce misery.
Regards,

| Latest news from Edex teachers at KSU: No pay during vacation time this year. Teachers are staying at uni, even if there are no students for the break. It's what one teacher told me. |

BULLSHIT! The teachers are working 8-2 this week and start break next week. Teachers who are staying in Saudi will get paid, those who are leaving the country will forfeit a week of pay. They were warned ahead of time, I'm not exactly sure of the reasons why. Something to do with the contact w/KSU?
I know because I'm here, this is not second hand. |

| Edex would make for a superb sit-com. It's a shame Peter Sellars isn't around to play multiple roles. |
