So it must get incredibly hot...what do you do to keep cool in the oppressive heat of the day and night..?

Stay inside... run the AC. Restrict any outside activity to merely getting from one air conditioned space to the next as quickly as possible.

Swamp coolers are used in KSA I assume given how dry it is there.

I've mentioned this in other threads, but you can use a free proxy service called Toonel to get around Saudi's web security. It's slow, but effective, and I used it to post here while living in Saudi.

I pay $88 a year for a certain VPN service. If anyone's interested, I compared five download-speed checks from five different speed-checking sites, first with VPN off and then with VPN on (server based in New York). Results: average 3.0 mbps off; 1.6 with it on.

Others in our compound pay more for more bandwidth and get about 10 mbps without a VPN. I imagine the same VPN as I have would reduce their speed to 8 mbps or so...but I'm just guessing.

I never saw a swamp cooler in the Gulf, although they could be around in interior villages. And the assumption of it being dry is only true for probably a minority of places that EFL teachers live. Most of the cities are on the water (Kuwait, Manama, Jeddah, Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha), not in the interior... thus you get the super extreme heat along with super high humidity.

I recall moving flats one year and it was 125 degrees with about 90% humidity... damn near melted...

I never saw a swamp cooler in Riyadh (or anywhere else in Saudi); I have one here in Santa Fe.

John

After waiting one hundred days after sending my passport to the Houston consulate, I have arrived in Saudi Arabia . . .

I just ate some type of roll with cheese and lemon in it in a Krispy Kream. The roll was prepared by a couple of Nepali.

No use of a proxy or anything else to access here.

You can get all the financial web sites you want without a VPN--no restrictions that I know of. Just get the best download speed you can buy so you can move your funds reliably. Use STC's DSL service. Naughty sites and also dating sites are all blocked...just use a VPN to get around blocking. Your IP address shows up as being in the US or UK or wherever.
