I worked briefly in Fuji Shi, which is right next to Fujinomiya, when I first came to Japan. The reason I left was because it's the dirtiest city in Japan and has the highest rate of leukaemia. The air stinks everyday because of the MANY paper factories.
Fujinomiya is a couple of kilometres down the road and SLIGHTLY better than Fuji shi... But far from what I would call a great place. |

Fujinomiya is one of those places that you must pass through to get to Mt Fuji. And from what I saw of the place, it was indeed a great place to pass through, but not so great for lingering for more than a few minutes. |

I also lived in Fuji-shi. The main school where I worked was Shimizu Nova, but I sometimes substituted at Fujinomiya Nova. Is that where you'll be working? If so, I can tell you a lot about it.
Fujinomiya is a very small town, it has a big shopping center, and a run down old time shopping area, and a great view of Mt. Fuji. Shizuoka city is really nice, but most of the rest of the Prefecture is very industrial. Numazu and Atami are also nice. |

I don't live there but a good friend of mine used to live in ITO. In Shizuoka you want to be on the ocean.
At least you won't be too far off!!
There are some decent beaches and beautiful shorelines.
The peopel were super friendly, as they usually are outside of Tokyo, and the seafood is also good.
The interior offers some excellent hiking / cycling as well as onsens, the touristy variety, and I'm sure a lot more recreational...
Hope this is of some use!! |
