Some things you may want to consider:
1. The time it takes to apply and jump through all the hoops just getting in to Saudi Arabia. For all the effort it takes -you should look at staying at least 2-3 years to make it worth your while. Also getting out of the Kingdom may also be difficult, if you run into problems or need to leave the country in an emergency.
2. Choose your employer carefully as not all employers are trust worthy, dependable or reliable. Have you done plenty of research. Without ME experience your expectations of a high salary may have to be lower.
3. What's your personality type? As this will influence your ability to cope as well as save.
4. If things do not pan out the way you envisoned, will you be able to go back to your old job after your stint in KSA?
5. As a young single male...are you aware of the strict laws regarding gender segregation? Can you cope with this?
6. Are you prepared to live with the other restrictions: No booze, no pork none of the other usual entertainment you may take for granted in the west such as bars, cinemas, clubs, concerts, etc..
If you find a 'good employer with a decent reputation' that offers you a work visa(Igama)at least 12-13 grand Riyals min. a month with your own furnished accommodation NOT shared, medical plan, school transportation /or travel allowance and flights to and from home, along with at least 45 days of holidays a year, and a work schedule 20-25 teaching hours per week, weekends off(Thurs. & Fri.) then go for it! You should be able to save. Some places offer decent overtime and you can potentially earn more...but again this depends on the employer.
Good luck with your decision... |

So what are the documents needed for working in Saudi Arabia?
My degree is in English and I have a CELTA. I've taught for seven years in Asia, but never in Saudi Arabia. Do you need a MA to teach in Saudia Arabia? |

Dear metropolis,
"Do you need a MA to teach in Saudia Arabia?"
"2. Choose your employer carefully as not all employers are trust worthy, dependable or reliable. Have you done plenty of research. Without ME experience your expectations of a high salary may have to be lower."
The problem is that without an MA you won't be able to "choose your employer carefully." Virtually ALL of the jobs available to you will be with bottom-feeders.
This is NOT to say that having an MA will ensure a great job, either. Some of the employers who require an MA are also bottom-feeders.
Regards,
John |

I assume when you say 'documents' you are refering to your education documents? The best way to find out about various qualifications for KSA is to read some of the Saudi jobs posted on Dave's. Most of them state what sort of qualifications they are looking for...this should give you a good idea...as it varies from place to place. But yes, a ligitimate masters degree is the norm or else they may state a combination of other lesser qualifications plus experience. There is no real definitive answer to your question.
'Documents' necessary for a Saudi work visa are posted on Saudi Embassy website. |

Some employers accept a BA while others require nothing less than a masters degree. Depends on your level and years of experience, if you hold a CELTA/equivalent TEFL cert, and generally, if your degree is TESOL-related. Do an Internet search on TEFL Saudi for current job ads to see what qualifications employers are requiring.
I second johnslat's comments about employers. Anyone contemplating a position in Saudi Arabia really needs to check out feedback/reviews on the employer, especially if the employer is a recruiter. And as cmp45 pointed out, if you've never lived/worked in the Gulf, do some serious soul-searching to see if your lifestyle and personality could handle the adjustment it takes to live in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom is not everyone's cup of tea. (Nor is it a piece of cake!) |

Thanks CMP for the info. Very informative post.
I am a pretty introverted guy so I think the ME wouldn't be a problem for me. I am completely content with cable t.v., dvd's, and a decent place to workout each day. My hopes are to stay in the U.S., but want to have a backup plan just in case things go sour at my workplace There have been rumors of faculty reductions over the past few weeks (federal job) and being that I am the newest faculty member, would be the first to be released.
Can anyone give me any information on the area called Dammam, Saudi Arabia? I have been told that one of the community colleges affiliated with KFUPM has openings.
Thanks. |

What do you think? Yes Yes Yes Yes. Even if you get screwed over a little, are you going to make more in Saudi Arabia or the Middle East than say somewhere else. Settle financial things on your Saudi Salary and then get your Phd being helped by your earned money |

I was offered a contract despite having just a BA. I do have several years teaching experience, however and am presently in Korea.
I turned them down because I refuse to give up my passport and I am uncomfortable with the aspect of needing an exit visa to leave.
I'll stay in Korea. At my level the pay is better and I am not in a gilded cage and can leave if ever and whenever I wish. |

Dear plumpy nut,
Where have you worked/are you working in Saudi? Do you have an MA? How long did you work/have you worked there?
The reason I ask is this:
"Even if you get screwed over a little . . . ."
Without an MA, you often get screwed over a lot, not a little.
Sometimes money can cost too much.
Regards,
John |
