Hi everyone, bear with me as i'm new to this site... I'm planning on teaching in Asia early next year and i'm trying to find out where i can and can't go. I have my TEFL certificate however i don't have a degree from university. My first choice would be South Korea as i've heard such great things but i've been told many times i have no chance without university. I'm a 25 year old Canadian male and I'm really open to going anywhere. Does anyone know where i might be able to go? i've heard China might be my best chance.

In China you will work for sketchy bosses at unlicensed schools or sent to the hinterlands. Not very ideal.

I'm not sure what your educational background is, but for those with an associates degree, current college students and recent graduates they may be eligible to participate in the Talk program for Korea.

thanks. i don't have any other education besides highschool and my TESOL certificate. I was told i should have no problems finding a job, as long as i'm not picky as to where i go. I'm starting to fear this might not be the case

i've been looking around and noticed that i might have a chance to work in Japan with a Working Holiday Visa, which does not require a degree. Any thoughts?

I answered your identical post in the Japan forum. Short answer: yes. Read it for more information.

Most places in Asia require a degree for legal work as an ESL teacher.

The days of grabbing a quick TESOL cert after high school and backpacking your way from country to country have for the most part gone the way of the dodo bird.

Exceptions are Japan (experience counts and there are other legal options), Indonesia (may be possible with just a TESOL cert. but that door will quickly close), Cambodia or Laos.

Other than that, your options for legal work with just high school and a TESOL cert rapidly approach "0".

Proper work with all the correct paperwork = no.

Work (usually at some language mill) with a (business) visa and residence permit = maybe (albeit not 100% legal it is often done).

It all depends ... see naturegirl's post above.

You can teach in most of Latin America legally without a degree. A TEFL would be needed, and a CELTA would be best since you dont have a degree.
