I would like to get some feedback from people currently living and teaching in these cities. I am a certified teacher with 4 years of experience in 4 different countries. I am working in Monterrey now and not quite happy with it (for a number of reasons, but not because of the violence).
The input I am looking for is median rate of pay for these areas and overall cost of living. What kinds of jobs are available, quality of life, where do you live, what do you pay for housing etc. Any other feedback that you think helpful is also appreciated.
I am looking for someplace to settle long term so I really want to think this decision through and hear from people that are there right now or been there recently. |

I say that if you're going to choose between Mexico City and Guadalajara, go big or go home.
When I taught corporate classes, I made about 12,000.
Now that I teach in a private school, I make significantly more that 20, but sometimes I hate my life
My partner and I pay about 8000 for a two bedroom in a nice area, but you can certainly find much cheaper (and much more expensive!)
Quality of life is good except for the commute. I commute about 45 min - 1 hr now depending on traffic, and that's considered good! In my old job I spent about 5 hours a day on public transport.
Hope that helps. |

Is it hard to find work in private schools such as yours? I have a B.A. TESOL, and 5 years of experience.
thanks. |

You will find that your quals dont really mean much in Mexico. If you walk into a school and they need an EFL teacher, you will be hired on the spot, doesnt matter much if you just took a TEFL course or you have been doing this for a while with all the right pieces of paper.
I have been offered the following monthly salaries in various colegios in Mexico DF: $4,000, $6,000, $8,000 $10,000 (took that one for my 1st job teaching secundaria, it was good pay for 3 days a week), $12,000 and $18,000 plus another $4,000 in vales de despensa (also took that job ). |
