Hello,
I was thinking to try for a position in Russia starting from next September. What's a good time to think about applying?
I would prefer a larger city, my own flat & not too long a commute (so Moscow seemed a bit rough) perhaps St. Petersburg
greetings

I would start applying around June/July. The visa process takes 1-2 months total, which includes all the things your employer has to do to get you a visa. If you want a larger city, long commutes are going to be a part of life. As for your own apartment, that would depend on your ability to bypass the McSchools, and you'll need experience to do that, and maybe some contacts in the city where you want to work as well. Also, you should know that schools that will pay you enough to afford your own flat are unlikely to provide much in the way of support when it comes to getting that flat. It's likely you'll be on your own looking for one, which might prove difficult if you don't have some knowledge of Russian. |

i would target a commute time of say, 1 hr/day, i would consider paying a little more for a flat (but not moscow prices, for a well located studio, from what i've read)
thanks for the tips! |

With that commuting time, you may want to look at Russia's other cities. Jobs are often advertised online in Ekaterinburg, which has a population of around 1m people I think. You might also have some luck looking in Volgograd or Krasnodar. I've only had one commute over an hour, but split shifts are common in this part of the world, and you'll likely be working at multiple companies in a single day, so the travel time does add up. |
