I posted a few weeks ago about my job hunting in China.
I got this offer for a teaching position.

Here are the basics:

Term of employment Feb13-Jan 31
Monthly Salary 5200 before tax 70% can be converted to USD
One month probation Two evaluations
Work load five days a week 16 teaching hours (45min)
economy class direct home flight one -way for one semester
For two semesters Oneway direct home and return
pay up to 320 rmb for water and electricity, 50 rmb traffic fee
Free apartment
They will buy medical insurance.
I got this job from a recruiter- (Amanda)of eslconsultant
I sent them my letter of release and letter of recommendation. Amanda wants me to sign it, but I have questions.

Does anyone know about this university?
They are looking for 5 English teachers and 2 Japanese teachers.

Are the contract details common in China?

Zhenjiang is near Nanjing. Does anyone know about the conditions there?
I have done a google search, but I need to chat with a teacher there.
I don't want to make the same mistake twice. I want to make an informed decision.

I also found info about Zhenjiang that was disturbing. They had bad conditions under the Helen Group. All the universities merged into Jiangsu university back in
2001. Does this mean it has improved? I don't know

Looks like a common set up.....except what's a "traffic fee?" Are you expected to teach in different parts of the city, or is the apartment far from the teaching buildings? Sorry I don't know about that area of Jiangsu. But about consolidation of schools, it doesn't mean the level of all of the schools in the university were automatically raised. You may have several colleges that vary by level of English student. Ask to speak to a current teacher if no one here has specific info, or even if they do.

50 RMB traffic fee? That's like what? About 2 days RT in a taxi and 10 to 15 RMB per trip. - or is that bus fare for a month at 1 RMB per ride? I would be concerned that just being in the contract. We get 300 RMB for the same thing (travel fees) and we just walk...

Check first, and don't take ANYTHING for granted (like I did when I came here)

Agree with the above. Also...ask if you'll be teaching at a single location.

I cannot find any current connections between Hangzhou Helen and Jiangsu University, but, if I were you I would check very carefully to make sure that all connections and bad habits from Hangzhou Helen (Zhejiang University Helen Chinatefl Network Co., Ltd) are not currently influencing Jiangsu University.

Forgive my ignorance but I do not know the history there. However, I am curious how one could investigate that. Would it be something obvious?

Zhenjiang is a medium-sized city located on the railway line between Nanjing and Shanghai. I have visited the city several times making the trip from Yangzhou to Shanghai. It's neither the best nor the worst example of a typical city of its size. Nanjing lies nearby, and the high-speed trains provide convenient access to Shanghai. I have no personal knowledge of Jiangsu University, except that the school is quite large, the result of several amalgamations.

Is Jiangsu University the same as Jiangnan University? I've seen the two names used interchangeably, and judging by the descriptions listed here, they seem to be in approximately the same place.

I do not have any experience with Jiangsu University. I only know that Hangzhou Helen has a history of selling schools on the idea of cheating and lying to FT's in every way possible.

Are you perhaps getting the city of Zhenjiang confused with the province of Zhejiang ?

Should not be the same. Jiangnan University is in Wuxi.
Jiangsu University is in Zhenjiang.

I recall an ad that I read in the past where a recruiter seemed to intentionally confuse the names of universities in Jiangsu Province.

I was wondering if the same thing was happening here. Thanks for clearing that up.

Hi

I sent the recruiter a reply about the Jiangsu Univ. offer. I asked her a few questions about the position. Where and what will I teach? Also if there is a connection between Jiangsu and Helen Group?

I also told her I wanted feedback about the other universities she sent my resume to.

She sent out several, but only offer. I don't want to take this one offer. I told her I want to compare other job offers. She has been emailing me about the contract for one week. I don't want to make a hasty decision.
