Ah ha! several Russian markets. The "Russian market" where I got my controversial deal, is situated like this.
Walk from the Tax Center towards Ben Than market, Take a left about 1 or 2 streets along. Situated on the right side of that street, about 150mtrs along is a huge market, commonly referred to as the Russian market.
They sell mostly clothing, shoes, watches and personal items. As I said earlier, I don't recall the street name.
Good luck- maybe you will find the same seller who is by now getting quite famous for his 33&1/3rd prices. compared to asking price.
Look for the short man with black hair and brown eyes. Maybe his name is Mr Nguyen, but then I didn't ask.
This is the market that moved from across the road from the Post Office a few years ago, and it was called the "Russian market" there. I believe from locals it kept that name, but officially it may be called something else. |

Ah that explains things. I was referring to the Russian Market with "Russian Market" written in huge letters on the entrance. It's in the Central Garden building (the big pink building on the river in D1). Snolly seems to be talking about Saigon Square, assuming I've read the directions properly.

Anyway, to answer my own question, they really aren't budging on price much in the Russian Market. But then the prices are more reasonable to begin with. I got a pretty thick "North Face" jacket with a fleece zipped into the lining for 750k. Could've probably bargained about 50k off that if I'd tried, but it seemed a good price so I didn't bother. One sweatshirt I wanted was 380k, and she wouldn't go below 350k so I walked away. In Ben Thanh, I always expect to pay about a third of the initial quoted price, but I find Saigon Square has less room for negotiation, but a far more reasonable starting point on most items. |

I hope you enjoy wearing the Fleece jacket and sweat shirt in HCMC. May I suggest not wearing them at the same time. |

Oh you mean that place that sells stuff on the sidewalk outside? Old pairs of used shoes and phone chargers? Because if you follow these directions that is where you end up. If one walks toward Ben Tan market from tax center one ends up at the Ben Tan market after two blocks. or rather, just across the circle from it. Over by the buss station gas station. So according to your instructions here one would then turn left and that would put one back among the antique shop area and turn right on calumette street. Which is an open air junk shop. Over by the art museum. ( by the way they are tearing the block down there) Are you really talking about the place a few blocks further which is between the bus circle and pham ngu lao?
Or are you just guestimating ? |

Be careful what you buy. Many years ago I bought a Gortex rain coat and pants with all the official tags. I told her that if I had any problems with it I would be back to return it as I lived in Sai Gon. She assured me it was original and manufactured for export only.
When I came home my wife laughed her ass off saying how stupid I was as this is Vietnam and seldom anything is real or has quality. The first rain I went to work completely wet as the suit sucked up the water like a sponge. But it sure looked good.
I can tell of countless stories of people who have had tailored made clothes and shoes. In my humble opinion they look like shit and know it wil have a short wear life. The people who swore to the quality and price of these clothes (again in my own opinion) were to proud to admit it.
I learned my lesson and went to BBK when I wanted quality work clothes and shoes. |

No it's not. "Two streets down" from the Tax Centre puts you on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, and turning left will bring you to Saigon Square.
Which is quite some distance from the market you're talking about. Snolly's directions are fine, I have no idea how you could claim to end up over by Calmette by following them. |

Right Mad hatter-You follow what you think are the directions-maybe you will find a new market or establish a new one.
I guess maps and directions are quite foreign to some people. Just like lesson plans are to some teachers.
This matter is over and out for me- I have better things to do with my time. Thanks for the interest and support folks. |

| Lesson plan?? That is one of the most taboo concepts in Viet Nam. Shame on you Snolly! Only teachers that need a crutch would dare use a lesson plan let alone know how to write one. You are here by expelled to ESL hell and may God have mercy on your soul. |

Absolutely untrue! if you follow Snollys instructions go past Pastuer, and nam Ky Khoi Ngia and then you stare straight at The Benh Tan market circle. You turn left and good luck avoiding the traffic in the circle and head on over towards the art museum antiques. then turn right and about a 100 meters you are on Calumette. all along there you may buy as much old used phone chargers and old shoes and used stuff as you need. This is a wild goose chase!
I am amazed at such false information. If there was a way to post an image of a map you would see immediately that I am correct. I have tried to post maps but I can not figure out how to post a map? would someone please instruct me how to post a link to a map so that we can get the facts clear so that no one can use this forum as a way to make up stories? read with even a little care and you can see who is telling stories about jobs that are not true and wages and prices they bought things for and places that are not where they say they are. |

Does not mean walk past two streets. Pre-intermediate students studying a directions unit would be able to understand this. |

Oh dear-I'm sprung! I'm just a pathological liar, trying to corrupt readers' minds with my special type of misinformation. I make up stories about jobs that dont exist, salaries that dont get paid, and places that must be on other planets.
I guess my posts are just not worth reading then. If you find them so, please folks, don't waste your time by reading my misinformation-there is probably some hidden sinister plot behind it all.
Please keep amusing me with what must surely be your strange sense of humour-cultural hangover from Wonderland? |

I am thoroughly confused. the directions that Snolly gave lead to a smallish, not huge, building that has mostly clothes for sale and has only 3 floors. I haven't been there in nearly a year, but I don't think that is called Saigon Square.
Googling it, I find that Saigon Square is supposedly located at Hai Ba Trung and Le Duan, or Ton That Thong, both nowhere near Snolly's location. There is supposedly a supermarket there, which I don't recall seeing at Snolly's place on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, unless it has greatly changed and expanded since my last visit.
I've also been searching for the Russian Market for years, having found many different addresses for it on the net. |

I don't think Hmm yes.
Saigon Square is supposedly located at Hai Ba Trung and Le Duan Obviously very old map. Not surprising TIV.
There is supposedly a supermarket there I didnt see one, and that was only 2 weeks ago. I guess its not impossible one has been built in the last 2 weeks. Of course, that could depend on which "there" you mean, the one you know about or the one you don't know about.
Chim, you say you havent been there, that you are confused, and that you don't think.
Perhaps under the circumstances, it would be better to not comment on things you openly admit you don't know about. Maybe you bought your hat at the same place as another poster? Maybe at the Russian Market? or Saigon Square, or Wonderland?
I am AMAZED at what interest this matter has generated. Seems I am all powerful in bringing out the "Fringe element". Such power. |
