Tricky one.

Let's just say I don't believe in the god muslims, jews and christians worship. I also think supremacist religions should be banned. I'd go further and say that the religion out here is FUBAR.

Clear enough?

Surprised yes as clear as a foggy day in London, but then again I never expected you to respond. Now that you have, I regret having asked the question Embarassed Laughing

Wasn't there a case of a foreigner getting done a few years back for 'fortune telling' with cards?....he got accused of sorcery when he was just having a bit of fun.

Thanks for the heads up on that, Iam sure with all the Harry Potter out in the culture at large, this is bound to come up.

They do tend to take this thing VERY seriously, and i don;t think enough people enter into teaching there with eyes fully open. Theirs is a different society than ours, they do things differently. Is it right? Is it wrong? Is it for us to say?

I guess we should all have both a healthy respect and a little fear of what goes on over there. its your choice to go, to assume that years of culture is going to bend to your will is completely foolish

My own two cents

Yesterday my class was trying to needle me about religion. I was told that Adam (of Eve fame) was 20 metres tall. When I queried this, the guy, totally serious, said, "How do you think they built the Pyramids?"

I waited until the end of the lesson before laughing my head off. In fact, 24 hours later and I'm still laughing. God knows where my head is.

One of our guys explained how rock music was evil. He cut an apple in two and put each half in a different room. He then played rock music in one room and the koran in another. After one week the apple that 'listened' to rock music was all shriveled and screwed up. The apple that listened to the koran was still fresh. Therefore rock music is evil.

This is great as now I don't need to fork out on expensive fridges and freezers. I can just put my shrimps and fish together with my chicken in a normal room and play the koran to them.

If that isn't black magic, I don't know what is.

Maybe it's the rock music that needs changing. I'd try the same experiment again with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Who or Led Zep....then I think we'd get a different result. Smile

Re: Adam's height.

If you go to Sri Lanka and climb Adam's peak, you'll find a large footprint left by Adam that would match a 20 meter man.

So, maybe the students are right.

Not too long ago, I saw a news piece about a fellow from Lebanon locked up in Saudi, convicted of sorcery and awaiting his execution. Evidently, he hosted a television show in Lebanon, taking calls from viewers and predicting their futures. Anyway, he went to Saudi for Hajj and was arrested upon arrival. Exclamation

Did you hear about that dyslexic devil worshipper who sold his soul to Santa?

These beliefs are not confined to locals. I had an American colleague who was a convert to Islam, Convinced that the family maidservant had been up to no good. He went to the local police in Dhahran and denounced her for practising magic. "I saw her handling my clothes." he is reported to have said to a colleague who expressed curioisity. The Witches of Salem are in the imagination of many alive and well.
