|
|
Hello! I am interested in spending a year teaching in Mexico. I will be available after June 2012
I am a 26 year old woman. I have a B Ed in English Ed, I am certified to teach ESL, English/Language Arts, and Biology in the state of Oklahoma. I've taught ESL and English for ELLs for 2 years in US public schools. I have an M.Ed in Bilingual Ed/TESL. I have an TEFL cert too somewhere
My questions are:
1) How do I get started looking for an international school job? Are the contracts available for 1 year (2 years is a little long, I'd probably be maintianing a long-distance relationship)
2) I want to live somewhere with yoga and a natural foods market- would Monterrey be a good fit? Where else?
3) what's an average salary?
any advice websites would be much appreciated thank you |

Try www.global-ers.com
They should be able to land you a job in Mexico City.

I would not recommend Monterrey because of the violence. A lot of Mexicans with money are moving to Texas and/or California. CNN had a big special on it and I saw a lot about it while I was living in Mexico City. Mexico City is much more secure and stable. No violence from the cartel and a lot of jobs. Natural foods markets are on every corner in Mexico City. They also have a few stores called The Green Corner. They sell organic food, much from the U.S. They are little versions of Whole Foods in the states.

For a private high school maybe anwhere between 9, 000 to 15,000 pesos a month. But be careful because some only pay around 7,000.00.
Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. I am curious athough....aren't you worried about getting your job back in Oklahoma after being abroad teaching EFL for a year? Teaching jobs in the states are almost impossible to get these days. |

Thank you for the info, will also consider DF.
Honestly I am not too concerned with getting a teaching job when I return, I want to move out of the public school system anyways (would like to do community college ESL) but I had 3 job offers for this year, I'm sure something will turn up |

You're welcome. Mexico City has more to offer in my opinion plus it probably is safer than Monterrey right now. You know that if you do ESL in a commnity college in the states after you return from Mexico, it will be hard to find a full-time gig that will give you bennies. You say you had 3 offers...for ESL in the states?
I guess I need to get out of Plano because there is NOTHING here. If you decide on Mexico City, look for something in Polanco or the south. Both are pretty nice areas. |

1) International schools in Mexico recruit at job fairs in the US and Canada in January and February. Check back with your school if you can to see about upcoming events. Barring that, there is a website for international school reviews at http://www.internationalschoolsreview.com/ though you need to be a member to get more detailed info.
As far as I've seen, contracts are 2 years long...you'd have to negotiate to get it to a year hoping that the school really needs to fill the position. My advice on that is to apply to teach science or biology...such teachers are always in demand. Another possibility is to sign a two year long contract and make the decision to stay or go at the end of a year. Not exactly on the level and you would forfeit some benefits but there would be no other serious penalty for leaving early.
2) Monterrey, Mexico City, and Guadalajara are your three best bets to find what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure you'd find yoga in other places and 'natural foods' is a fit for most of the country, but combine that with the right job and you probably want to stay with the largest three cities.
3) two contract types are available at international schools - an international hire and a national hire. You should see a minimum of 20,000 pesos a month salary for a first contract and additional benefits as an international hire, such as airfare, housing, medical, etc. National hires don't get housing and airfare and it makes a big difference, so do watch for it if you get an interview.
Here is the website for the ASF in Mexico City - I am most familiar with this one as an international school. They list their US job fairs and dates for local job fairs. Dig around for openings they should be posting soon.
