Question: How can I get a degree in Anthropology from UCLA, speak three languages, be 23 years old And..never have heard of places like: HCT, the MLI, Zayed University...and a multitude of others.

It sounds like you want to connect to your roots in Iran...just go there. They'd be happy to have you..and you will learn more in that country than you ever will in places like Sharjah, or Saudi Arabia.

To begin with, the MLI doesn't exist!

It's been defunct for 7 years!

Thank you each for your responses.

7.5 -11 k each might be possible at one of the least desirable schools but if housing is only partially (and probably not at all) covered you'll not be seeing any savings. You won't get annual tickets, you won't get medical and I'd be darn sure that proper working papers were in place or in the works (you will have to take various medical tests/x rays, fingerprints and possibly a security check) in order to get a proper working visa - all of which happens AFTER you arrive. If you don't pass one of these, you're out.

Names of these 'least desirable' schools would be very appreciated.

Unless they've changed it, Oxford trainees teach a lesson to their peer trainees. VS is absolutely correct: this is NOT considered to meet the standard minimum for cert courses. CELTA, SIT, and Trinity are the name brand courses that DO meet the standard.

Look for:
120+ hours on site
at least 6 hours of supervised teaching with actual language students

An Oxford cert will not help you on any competitive ESL/EFL job market.

This is correct, the final lesson plan is presented to the peers.
Neither of us have paid for the program yet. We had trouble looking for a CELTA-specific certification program in the Los Angeles area, as odd as that sounds. Research has been gearing us towards Oxford until this point.

Go to China, Japan, Thailand, and/or Korea for 3 to 5 years and then you can come back and get a salary you are asking for.

I know people with an MA in applied linguistics and 5 years experience who were hired by HCT 2 years ago and they are making 14K amonth with housing included.

7K a month? Possible. w/housing? maybe. Anything more? Seriously doubtfu. But since your friend is coming here, have him stop by the Uni's and the local schools, but he should be expecting to be disappointed.

The best time for him to come would be in March to the TESOL Arabia convention and maybe he can swing a job that way. Good luck.

Thanks. Neither of us are planning on doing this long-term. The goal is to work for one or two years, save a little money, do a little traveling, then return to the U.S. for law school. Regarding east Asia, we're simply not interested, we would like to work within the ME specifically.

Guaranteed!! Shocked

What is too bad is that for very little more money, they could've had a proper CELTA.

To the company's defense, those statements were never addressed publicly, nor in any form of advertisement regarding their services. One representative told just the two of us this after he had the chance to learn a little more about us, regarding our backgrounds.

I've heard of HCT and Zayed, but I'm also aware of our chances for finding work with either being minimal, given how we appear on paper. I was hoping to be referred to any "lesser" desired schools where we stand a greater chance of being hired.

Also, Iran is currently out of the question given the political climate.

You don't seem to understand. ANY of the private or government schools in the UAE that are NOT the "international" schools are those second and third tier schools.

There are literally several dozens of, or hundreds (depending on where you want to work). But they won't pay you 7K AED a month including housing, not with your experience...

As for those locations... Look up academic city sharjah in google maps. The schools that are there are all those "secondary/third" level schools.

Another thing you will find out is that if you look iranian/iraqi then they won't pay you what the "western" looking staff get, no matter what your passport says.

I know a brit who is earning her MA in applied linguistics, who has a CELTA and she isn't getting more than 6K a month (w/out housing). All because she is of pakistani descent. It doesn't matter that she was born in London, and grew up there... she looks pakistani and is therefore paid what paki's get.
