The OP never mentioned who "they" were, did he? Yet everyone assumed "they" meant a childless couple, probably in their mid-twenties . . .
Fair enough.
This is a young person's game, this TEFL business. And when someone says "we", they obviously mean themselves and their 'bf' or 'gf'.
But I think you ought to be aware that there are others out there -- people who don't happen to share your age group, your marital or parental status � but people who are nonetheless very much members of this TEFL community.

Further, I admit that this really puzzles me:
linguistic advise and comments as your's is clearly not as up to scratch as you think it to be.
verb: to advise
noun: advice
your's = your is???
as you think it to be?? is??
I admit to being a bit pedantic, and to using the 'edit' function frequently because I'm aware that everything we write here does in fact become a part of a public record - and Dave's is basically an audience of our peers (and I know well that employers are a part of our ranks). We teach the language, after all, so getting it essentially right is a reasonable standard for the forum, IMO>
I don't think there is anything off-base about a grammatical discussion here where we are mostly English language instructors, after all. |

In answer to the OP, that's about 3,500 quid. That's a lot more than the going monthly rates of 1000 in a typical dershane back in the 90s, as out of date as that info assuredly is. Plenty to live on I think.
As for the other issues raised in this thread, I'd like to announce that the Grammar Politsiya will be on dawn patrol rounding up all lingo-evolutionist anti-social elements and sending them off for re-education in our correctional centres. Please have all your documents and a small bag containing a change of clothes ready by the front door. |

Hi All,
I agree that Istanbul is more cosmopolitan as it's population is almost 5 times more than Izmir's.
I'm not really sure about people being more open minded in Istanbul.
Izmir and its people known in Turkey for their relaxed and open minded attitude.
Rents are significantly cheaper in Izmir, for 1000TL you can rent a nice flat in Izmir, or even a house in Guzelbahce area but in Istanbul for a decent flat in a good area 1000TL is a starting price. Although salaries are sometimes a bit higher in Istanbul the difference is definitely not big enough!
I don't agree that Istanbul is better for a 1st timer in Turkey. I think it all depends on the person, some people just want to live in a big city and some like it quieter. A rush hour traffic in Istanbul is not my cup of tea.
If the OP and partner are after a big city life, Istanbul is definitely better but if they prefer a city which is not far away from nice beaches, mountains, small fishing villages etc then imo Izmir is a very good option.
Another thing is because the majority of the foreigners move to Istanbul the job options are better in Izmir. |

Thanks gursky, your info is very useful. Izmir does foe us seem the nicer place to live. We really miss the coast where we are at the moment. The job situation sound OK too.
