Oman is nothing like Saudi... it can be very quick. If they are in a big hurry, you can use the tourist visa that is given on arrival. (depends on your passport, of course... not every country can get the tourist visa)

How long is a piece of string?
It depends on how badly they want you quickly and how much wasta they have with the Ministry. If your job is next October, they will not be in a hurry. Anywhere from next week to the week before your classes begin.
