Is anyone actually being given an indefinite contract? I have never heard of such a thing in education. That is done with laborers, not professionals.

VS,
I cannot speak on how Omani law interprets "indefinite contracts", but in most European countries, an indefinite contract is virtually equivalent to "tenure" in US universities.
Whilst not guaranteeing a job for life, it does make it very difficult for the employer to get rid of an employee. Employees with an indefinite contract (as most UK university lecturers have) have usually legally acquired these rights by being at the university for 2 years continuously. They can only be dismissed for disciplinary reasons, usually after a series of verbal and written warnings.
In Spain, for example, severance pay is a maximum of 45 days salary for every year worked. It's basically an employer's way of saying "You play by these rules until we change our mind". |

I can pretty much guarantee that no expat teacher would have anything approaching the concept of tenure in the Middle East. Only locals would be eligible.

I've known people to prevail in contract disputes even in the evil kingdom. |
