Hello all!

After reading your posts here I find myself overwhelmed and a bit clueless about the big endeavor I am soon to undertake. I would truly appreciate any and all help and information in this research-application-job process that I am just beginning.

I am a Russian citizen, grew up in Eburg, fluent in Russian, volunteer taught abroad, tutored English abroad, have TEFL certificate from teflinstitute, and teaching experience in the States. I am applying to and counting on being accepted to grad school in St Peter for Fall semester. And am looking for a teaching job meanwhile there to support myself. I don't require much, but I would need to earn above subsistence in considerably less than full time position.

Would the fact that I'm living and studying there on permanent basis put me in some special category of employment? I am there to stay and I'm able to perceive through the notorious Russian BS -- how can I capitalize on that, on knowing Russian, and not needing a visa to work/live? What sort a job should I aim for? Are these McSchools a necessary stepping stone or could/should I contend on something more decent, legitamate? Are there classroom positions for part-time or will I be limited to tutoring?

I'm full of questions right now, and excitement, working on being patient and just generally prepared for the move come summer.

Dear Igor

Welcome to the board. I don't know much about the St Petersburg TEFL scene, except that it is relatively small. However, of all the new posters who write here, you are probably in the best position, so I cannot imagine too many obstacles hindering you.

In any case, some thoughts. Forget MacSchools, for starters. They are invaluable for newcomers to Russia, not much else more. You, I take it, will not need much help in that regard.

Private work is always more lucrative, but a school will be helpful in making contacts. I'd attach myself part-time with one. Teaching evening classes should fit in with your own day studies.

Don't forget translation work. Big demand for that too. Again, you would be well placed for that.

Don't know about special categories of employment. You'll be officially taxed at 13% yay! You'll be cheaper to recruit, not needing a visa. But beyond that, no idea.
