It isn't unusual to discriminate on gender, marital status, age, or nationality in the GCC - I'm just guessing, someone else will have to confirm, but probably it is the Ministry of Education's policy to only have female teachers in the early grades.

No vacancies for male teachers in primary because ADEC has decided to "feminise" primary schools. All female teachers. You may wish to apply to teach higher grades, as your home country qualifications do not always match what you are assigned to teach here.

Also, yes, ADEC does all its hiring through recruiters. Teach Away, Caneducom, AIDCINC, Teachanywhere.

I am perfectly happy with my job (there's always nonsense to deal with, but that's not exclusive to ADEC or the GCC. It's universal) and know a large number of teachers - in all manner of placements, as with ADEC you don't choose where you'll be working; you're placed according to the needs of the school/completely randomly - who are also happy.

In the interest of full disclosure, I also know a good number of teachers who are NOT happy. It's a mix of luck and attitude on how you'll manage here. But I like it.

I don't know of mimi's sense of ethics and wouldn't dare speculate. But the only people that I have known to be very happy and content with their positions in the Gulf states (outside of content teachers) are the ones who, by whatever means allows them to sleep like a baby at nght, are the ones who leave their Western-oriented ethics behind in the West...and adopt the perverted sense of education in the Gulf.

God knows how I stayed on as long as I did!

It's really about how much you can swallow without choking!

But IS... how much of your resentment is due to the nasty termination method of your last Gulf employer? It has (naturally) colored your whole attitude towards the area. For those who didn't share that experience and left at their own time and choice, they will not share your negativity... and they should not.

I'm not reflecting on that, I'm reflecting on all of the "good teachers" who made my job harder, by throwing back their heads and swigging down bottled water at the teacher's desk at the front of the classroom whilst the "lil' princesses" tried their darndest to choke themselves with chips and drown themselves with sodas just before I came in and enforced the system rules of no drinks or food in the classrooms.

Their job was a dream and their teacher ratings...over the Moon!

God Bless the "Good Teacher"...I won't!

It's just the way it is!

Are you reading the same thread as me IS? I have no idea what you are going on about. Confused

Have you had a bad day?

No, not so much a bad day, just bad memories of happy-go-lucky "teachers".

As I said, I won't speculate on the poster (she seems quite nice), but I found that "happy" teachers...there...tend to be the biggest corner-cutters. That's all.

It's my TCW!

Well...thanks for not speculating on my ethics. I do my job, and I'm STILL happy. I'm not bothered about what other people do or do not, and - other than one instance last term when I lost my zen - gave up on figuring out what's "fair" or not years ago. I am also fortunate in that I have an awesome department to work with.

I think my perspective (it's been only about 6 months so far) and It's Scary's exemplify how varied are the experiences of teachers in the UAE.

It'd be quite unfair for me to do so. I don't know you, but assume the best. It's the slackers and the system-gamers that I know to which I refer.

That works well...I used to work for an awesome college until we lost our Mormon Director.

It's the way the ball bounces!
