Hi - does anyone know any shops in Moscow or Voronezh where they are both reliable and keep books in store (as opposed to ordering them)?

What do you mean by reliable ? Are you looking to buy books online or in person ?

Thanks Ancient_D, I'll look into that. Hi Grenouille - I was thinking about in person, although a useful online Russian bookstore would also be something to consider. Hi Sashadroogie - Essentially, I want to buy textbooks, maybe a boxful or two at a time.

Hi Coledavis

Here are some more bookshops you can check through. ( Be warned though, I can't stand the rudeness of the staff in the first two places, but they do have all you need in ELT....)

Good luck

Thanks a lot, Sashadroogie. One near Pavelitsky - rather convenient. Must rein in my normal intransigence with the unnecessarily rude!

Sorry I didn't get back earlier. It seems that Sashadroogie has it covered.
I've never had to buy textbooks by the boxful, so I can't really comment on that aspect.
Good luck, hope you find what you're looking for.

Smile

That's a point Grenouile. I have not bought by the box load either, though my schools have. In any case, I'd phone up in advance to check that they have what you want in stock, especially audio components. And check they'll accept whatever credit card you have. For some reason basic retail technology, like cash registers and credit card readers, ceases to function whenever I go to the first two shops, grrr! Apparently it is all my fault too...

Good luck

good luk with your box full! biblio globus, has a pretty good selection of esl textbooks and audio, have been there myself. they also had quite a few english for special purposed books (although, very pricey so will have to check out those ones sasha listed above - hopefully they're cheaper if you have to put up with metro ticket service!)

A little late in the day, but here's some juicy info re bookshops.

There are serious discounts to be had on books if you qualify for the 'teacher' discount card. To be eligible, you'll need the usual stamped 'spravka' from your employers stating that you are a teacher in their school, a copy of your passport, visa etc. and sometimes a copy of your diplomas. Best to check in advance with each shop, or have a Russian speaker do this for you.

It's worth the effort. Bookhunter, for example, offers from 15% to 25% on selected books. Not too shabby.

But as ever, bear in mind that imbeciles operating the till in outfits like Britannia are not always capable of entering discount card info into their computer system. Expect delays - which are of course all your fault : )

Also, if you have a standard discount card for, say, Biblio Globus, this will be accepted by rival chain stores like Dom Knigi, and so you'll still get the typical 5% or 10% discount there too. As far as I know, most of the big bookshops operate like this, although I still can't see the point of accepting a rival's loyalty card. However, gift horses, mouths etc....

Hope that helps someone.

Books are pricey, but to be fair to the local bookshops, they are usually only converting the RRP from sterling to rubles. The price is basically the same as it would be at home. This is unlike other countries I've been to. For example, I was dismayed to find exorbitant prices in Prague bookshops. Even second-hand books were more expensive than new ones at home (or in Russia).

On the other hand, I'm sure most regulars have noticed a steady increase in the price of Russian books, especially steep in the last two years. When I first started work in Moscow years past, they were dirt cheap. Beautifully bound, illustrated etc., for a very low price indeed. Now, they are equal to British prices : ( Why didn't I snap up everything I could get my hands on then?

Also EFL books like Cutting Edge or English File used to have a much lower price for the Russian market. Not so any more, mores the pity...

Still, no worse off than home markets - no hiking up of foreign imports for books. I believe, though do not know, this is due to there being no VAT on books, as in the UK for example. Promotes culture and education, so the idea goes.
