No, 7,500 and if you factor in the apt agent's finder fee over a year, you're left with 7,200 which is what I was making in smaller cities with a lower cost of living not to mention marginal tax rate.
I think I'm just lucky where I am. The franchisee here is not your typical uber-frugal Chinese manager. I'm sure he knows he could've deducted rent from our shared 2 bdrm--standard policy as I'd been informed and anticipated--but we'd still be over 10,000 /mo. Perhaps part of my good fortune is all the negativity about this private franchise on Dave's and the fact it's a small city--I was told when I arrived late Oct that head office couldn't get them a teacher for September. They probably decided to make their offer more appealing. So, thanks all you ranters!  |

Good one naturegirl. Sounds like an entry level position at most language schools in Mexico City. |
Most entry-level TEFL jobs worldwide pay about $500 US a month... Some a little less, some a little more, but it all comes out to that, about 500 bucks a month. |

Native or near native speakers with university degrees and certificates can do better, much better. Hogwans in Korea are constantly hiring. You can even do better than $500 a month in Mexico. I freelanced in Mexico City 10 years ago and did much better than that. |

I (graduate, CELTA, newbie) got 5000 kuai in my first job at a university in the south-east, accommodation included. A private language school in Xi'an also offered me a job for 5000 a month.
Second year I'm bringing home about 1000 euros a month as a freelancer in Germany.
Congratulations to those making good money in EFL. So far it ain't me. |

I didn't mean to sound unhappy with my lot - when I chose Germany, it wasn't because of the earning potential, and when I lived in China, I felt richer than I've ever felt in my life, what with the cost of living being so low. |

Perhaps. But to make good money in a place like Japan also means you will spend it on a much higher cost of living. The MidEast is the hands-down winner if your main goal is to save money. Contracts often include round-trip flights, paid vacations (often with airfare paid to your home country and back), free or subsidized housing, bonuses, medical care and you can easily save as there isn't much of the usual distractions to waste your TEFL funds on. |

Very good point. A job which pays $12 US per hour, 40 hours per week means poverty wages in San Fran, LA or NYC. But the same job translates to a decent living wage in Des Moines or Omaha.
I know people who earn excellent wages and they live in low-cost of living areas. For example, working 6-8 months per year in the USA earning good wages ($50-80,000) and living in Mexico, SE Asia or the PI, these folks truly live like kings.
Now that I think of it, I should change my screen name to King Gringo  |
