I got into Benito Juarez last Saturday, after an uneventful trip (even arrived 15 minutes early), but the woman at the Immigration desk only gave me 90 days on my tourist visa, after a bit of pleading - at first she gave me only 30 days. So what do I need to do to get an extension up to the 180 day maximum?
Mil gracias,

This is four years ago, but it was simply a case of going to Migracin (which was in Ejercito Nacional, Polanco) you get the Gigante bus from Metro Sevilla and it's a few blocks down from the final bus stop.
All you did was hand in your tourist card, prove you are solvent (a credit card, possibly with a statemant showing it's not maxed out or else a bundle of travellers checks) and ask for the extension. I'm not sure if there was any fee, but if so, it wasn't very much.
Best time to go is when your visa is about to run out, else they may wonder (correctly) what you're planning to do here for six months with no income.
BTW if you apply AFTER your original visa has expired it's a fine of about $300 pesos a month, or part thereof.
NOTE: All this information was correct when I did this, but I can't promise it hasn't changed. |

Of course, if you plan on working legally, certainly you'll find a job long before your 90 days are up, and your tourist visa will have been traded in for an FM-3 work visa, so there'll be nothing to worry about. |
