Does anybody know of other cities in the Kanto region that hire ALTs directly? So far, I've only seen an ad for Kasama City in Ibaraki which appeared on Gaijinpot.

Kashiwa City in Chiba is hiring directly. PM me for details.

Do any other cities broadcast job listings?

Narita and neighbouring Sakura both hire directly, but I'm afraid the application deadlines have already passed.

Narita don't advertise widely; just something in Japanese in the city council newsletter. I think Sakura is the same. I only found out about the jobs by asking around at the expat watering hole.

Narita does, and that is about all that I know of.

Kashiwa? Again? Seems like they are always in the news ALT wise. Wonder what happened this time? Was it Interac, Heart or RCS that made trouble?

HAHAHA, I know. But if you mean Interac as well, that's 95% of the ALT field.

I think in 2010 Heart made trouble in Kashiwa. Think they threw out all the ALT companies and went direct hire from then? Isn't that what happened?

I think it was a bit more than that; the labour board threw some serious legal action at them which suddenly had my dispatcher change their tune about work hours vs classroom hours and really pushing BOEs/schools to abide by the terms of GI contracts.

Some good and bad came out of it for us.

Something good:
All hours that we are required to be on the school grounds for any reason must be counted in the magic 29.5 hrs, including prep periods, if you are required to have lunch with the students and the attendance of any meetings, etc. - great for me since I have schools that honour this requirement and have been given a substantial amount of additional time off to compensate for any extra tasks I have performed after school; I'm queen of 3 day weekends... in fact, I'm off next Friday, too Very Happy

Something bad:
Some schools and BOEs continue to flout the rules and expect FT hours from ALTs who are technically only PT workers, with the only part of the presentation that they seem to take notice of being the "no team-teaching" part and then going on to forget that there is an "A" in ALT and that JTEs should still be in the classroom and helping with classroom management AT THE VERY LEAST!!!
And when these ALTs tell their dispatchers, they are normally told that they should encourage their schools to follow the rules, which often leads to the school making some vague complaint about the ALT being lazy or difficult to work which ultimately results in the ALT being relocated (if they are lucky) or finding that they don't get their contract renewed.
Then there are those that either don't complain or don't have an issue with the school not following the ridiculous procedures so don't say anything; if found out, those ALTs may find themself being threatened with disciplinary action... it's a catch 22

Wow, that's kinda nice. Wonder if that trend will continue? By that, I mean the union going after some of the worse offenders in the ALT industry. I personally teach on the side, as I don't make enough to support another person on my pay. Though I do work FT hours, with none of the benefits.

But, with this, it seems like which hole you want plugged. As the GU can only fight so many of these battles.

Would love an extra day off here or there. You lucky jerk you Sad

In Tochigi: Utsunomiya, Kanuma and Nasu hire directly, however the deadlines have long passed.

Kanuma and Nasu advertised locally in Japanese, Utsunomiya advertises very rarely, haven't seen any ads for this school year. It's more of a "stop by at city hall and apply" kind of thing.

Wow, these dispatch companies seem like total scum. Wonder why the Japanese government doesn't outlaw them.

Any idea what they did or if they made trouble in any other areas? I was in Yamagata with them for 2010 - 2011 and they were dropped for JET instead.

Last year, Kashiwa City direct hired 5 ALTs. The job ad for April 2012 indicates that Kashiwa Board of Education will hire 7 ALTs directly.

26$ an hour hmmmm I wonder if thats for an 8 hour day or just the hours you teach...?

Here in Australia, the going rate at a University Language Centre, is 73$ an hour for teaching. Private providers pay around 45-50 an hour.
