Hello,

I am very new to this so it may seem like a rookie/silly question but I am stuck. I have a BS in Childhood Education and will be completing my masters in TESOL this summer. Every link I click seems to have a program fee and a mandatory TESOL training course which I no longer need. Do any of these companies hire if you already have a TESOL certification??

Thanks in advance!

Talia

I too am not sure what website links you're referring to and what it is you're looking for. Where do you want to teach and for which grade level(s)? Do you already have TEFL experience?

I guess since I'm really new to this I have been clicking links such as Bridge TEFL, Oxford, etc. Since it will be my first experience working abroad and I will be going alone, I feel most comfortable with an established program.

Where in the world are you thinking of going? If we know that bit, people with experience in that region can tell you what employers are looking for and how to reach them.

I really have no preference as to where I go or what level I teach. I'd love to go to Europe but I know that is unlikely. I have teaching experience with children in early ed and elementary grades.

You stated that you'll be completing your MA in TESOL this summer and already have TESOL certification. Then why are you clicking on links such as Bridge TEFL, Oxford, etc.? Unless you want to teach for one of these companies or believe they're recruiters, your post should be more about how to go about starting your TEFL career overseas.

Jobs in Europe are pretty much impossible for Americans, as you probably already know. Further, there are no 'recruiters' or 'placement programmes' for this region - there are simply too many well-qualified teachers here on the ground for this to be necessary.

You basically need to come here on your own steam and find something in person - and I am talking here about Central/Eastern Europe where American citizens can still get legal working permits.

If you are looking for a company to handle all the details, I suggest that you consider Asia, where jobs are more often found from abroad and the arrangements made for you.

You are also possibly qualified for international schools. There are some websites where the (relatively few) openings for these are posted. I haven't got them at hand, but if you do a search for 'international school jobs' you'll find links.

What is your country of passport? It will largely determine where on the planet you can and cannot go for work as an EFL teacher (visa related issues).

Do you have home country certification as a teacher? It will determine what level of schools are open to you (everything from language academies to international schools).

Where on the planet would you want to work? It makes a difference in the recruiting process (use a recruiter, find an agency, look for a school directly, search from abroad, land and look).

My country passport is in the U.S. and I am certified to teach here. International schools seem like a great idea and more of what I am looking for. Thanks for the help![/quote]

Talia, these links you are clicking on are all to course providers who are trying to sell you their own version of a teacher training course. The employment "programs" they refer to are usually created by the company for the sole purpose of marketing their TEFL course. Any organization with a name that includes "TEFL" or "TESOL" will be a company that is primarily a course provider, NOT an employer, or even an agent or recruiter. (And beware of any organization with lots of T's and I's in the name! Very Happy) Some sites are much worse than others for listings that are ostensibly employment ads, but are in reality companies trying to sell their TEFL course. Most of the listings on TeachAbroad.com, for example, are not from employers looking for teachers, but from companies selling TEFL courses. The good news is that it doesn't take very long to begin to recognize their names, and once you do, not to waste your time clicking on their ads.
