What are some easily accessible ESL books there with a clear syllabus along with tests for a rookie private tutor to use?

I wanna keep things professional from the beginning and figured having a clear outline will help when I'm using my own materials for tutoring.

TOEFL is fairly common, as is the whole suite of Cambridge ESOL exams, such as PET, FCE, IELTS, etc. I find Barron's and Longman produce decent test prep material to work with one-to-one or small groups. That's the testing side of things.

I like Market Leader for business English classes.

User friendly for rookie teacher?

New English File from Oxford University Press

or

Touchstone from Cambridge University Press

Both have GREAT teacher's guides and are well rounded general English courses that would also mesh with stardardized tests.

I second the Market Leader nomination, it is a good series, and easy to supplement with extra newpaper articles (or subsitute altogether, sometimes they are just general business, but sometimes they are a little out of date). Depending on the level you might want to supplement with a bit more grammar, either Essential Grammar in Use, or English Grammar in Use, both by Cambridge University Press. Very clear examples of the whys and whens of grammar, but not overly long-winded. Easy to find just the grammar point you want to use, as they are arranged by topic, that is verb tenses, prepositions, adjectives, etc. Hands down the best grammar book I have ever used.

I'm loving the book recommendations, peeps. I'm looking on Amazon and feeling like a gluttonous kid in a candy store. How to choose?!

Also for business classes, I recently used a course called "The Business" (MacMillan), which was excellent. Admittedly, I've only used the advanced level, but they start at pre-intermediate.

I love these books too! Raymond Murphy, the author, is my TEFL hero. By the way, the exact titles are Basic Grammar in Use (for beginners) and Grammar in Use Intermediate. Both come in versions for teaching British English and North American English. I always have my private students buy the intermediate level book for grammar review, and they love these books as much as I do.

Raymond Murphy is an interesting choice of TEFL Hero Isla.

I'm more of a Michael McCarthy or Michael Lewis girl myself.

Who exactly do you plan to tutor? Helps to know in order to give a fair answer.

Also, for some students you might want to add E-Mail English and Telephone English, they are inexpensive and are great for students who have a need to perfect their skills in these areas.

Good point.

I'm in Saudi, so Saudis are my targets. Not to sure if I'm ready for business classes. I'm exploring my options at the moment though. One of my ideas was to hold a small group session for youth on weekends for starters. Actually, I live close to a Uni as well so that's also a possibility if I can make it worth my time. I'm open to suggests.

I think I forgot to say thank you for all the help. I'm going shopping for TEFL stuff and actually have a list to choose from. Smile
